Will an image from the first page of Google Images drive traffic to your site?

Also, what factors determine how images get onto Google Images first page? Someone mentioned to me that he's getting traffic to his blog due to his placing of an generic image of a 'tree' taken from Google Images' first page for keyword 'tree'. Can this be true?
