My Cat Pukes At Least Once A Week...But Why?

My cat has always puked..virtually from the first day we got her from a shelter. No-one there said she had a problem with puking so I can't understand why she's doing it now. At first I thought it might be Fur Balls (or Fur Sausages as they should be called) but I've noticed she pukes..er..just the food now, which she did about 15 minutes ago. What kind of food does she eat? Tuna in Spring Water from M & S don't you know (it's on offer there) and she loves it. We were advised to give her this type as brine damages cats' insides, apparently. As far as portions goes a tin of (adult) tuna lasts 4 days. She also eats munchies which she eats when her portion of tuna has been wolfed each day..so she will eat them at night-time, usually. They are very good munchies with lots of wonderful ingredients to keep cats healthy, including vegetables and stuff to stop her from being sick! The brand is James Wellbeloved and we actually bought some from the shelter, initially...and was told that Flojo loves them. She does..but there's one slight problem. She doesn't chew them properly. Whenever she is sick out they pop whole! She does chew the odd one but not all of them. Why she does this I have no idea. The puke is evenly split between the tuna and the munchies, so it's not like she prefers one over the other. We groom her too as that helps with the Fur Sausage thing. I've not seen any Fur Sausages for a while but she's still being sick. One thing I have noticed with her is that she makes strange sounds with her mouth. Now, I don't think for a moment she has a loose tooth or anything as there would probably be a smell associated with that...but could it be something regarding her mouth that's causing her to be sick? She does wear a collar but I check it regularly and it's not tight around her neck. Can anyone give me any pointers as to what may be wrong here? She's not even 3 yet. If someone suggests I take the collar off then I shall as she is microchipped. It was hubby's idea for the collar as it's got her name on the front and our telephone number on the back, just in case she makes a run for it! I would say she spends 98% of her time indoors. Her Daddy will let her out when he has a smoke and when the weather improves I shall peg the washing out and I will invite her outside with me. Is there any such thing as Indoor Catnip or grass she can chew? Well, at least the vet is down the road if she needs to be examined. Bit of a "dear do" though.

I would take her to the vet, but some cats just throw up - topsy tummies

Hubby said we shall take her "in a couple of weeks" and she's not ill, so I'm prepared to wait that long.

You know she may be eating her food too fast. Because I heard if cats eat their food too fast, they'll just throw it right up. Although I am not sure. If she is having problems with her teeth then that may be why she is swallowing her food whole and not chewing it up properly then throwing it back up. Then I suggest that you take her to the vet to have her checked out. There are some grass that you can grow from inside, I haven't used it though. Cats love it though is what I've heard. I hope your kitty feels better.

Hi Trisha! Thank you for your concerns over my cat. She isn't sick every day, it's just frustrating not knowing why she is doing it. You are right, she does eat very fast so it's no wonder she is sick practically straight after eating her food! Then she goes back for more lol. I will do a bit more research online, then find out the number of our vets as we need to register her there at some point anyway. Normally, the staff will ask us to bring Flojo in for a check-up which is an ideal way of getting to know the cat..and the owners.

If it's not hairballs, I have no idea as to why. But I know I have been able to grow cat grass indoors. It doesn't last long though...

Hiya Dawn. I'm missing the blue sky on your Avatar my friend although we had some here today so it was OK. What I'm worried about is growing some grass (sounds naughty haha) then she pukes after she eats it, which would defeat the object. One of Mum's cats seems to like eating leaves off a plant growing in her garden. No idea what it is but she loves eating it! If my poor Flojo had a garden she'd probably be eating allsorts.

Hi Janey, You're, obviously, an animal lover, very kind and very much concerned with your cat's well being. We don't have cats here, although I have feline friends that belong to our neighbors. When Haru, our dog, pukes, it's always because of indigestion. After he pukes and gets rid of something that should not be in his stomach, he gets back to his old cheerful self again. I'm not much help here, lol, but I suggest you take your dear cat to the Vet. I hope that she gets 100% well. God bless you, Janey. :-)

Awww thanks. Yes, I think you are right about the vet. I shall ring up tomorrow and they can either book her in for me or give me some advice. No way can I open up her mouth myself though, she'd have me. Haha! It would be a good opportunity to get her registered too. God bless you too!

My cousins cat was an indoor only animal and she grew grass for him in a flower pot on the window sill. My cat chews grass and will throw up every now and then. Sometimes he just throws up food, sometimes grass. I think it is natural for cats to do so .

I agree that it's natural but my cat is indoors most of the time. If she was outside more (which is impossible round here) then she would probably be sick out there, like Mum's cats. I've got a lot to think about and may even ring the vets tomorrow for some advice.

When there is no abrupt change of food, it is better to consult a vet. This way, your mind will be at ease of what's wrong with her. And don't forget to bring her papers with.

I will try some ideas suggested to me by other MyLotters but I promise you that I shall take Flojo to the vet if none of them work. Thanks for your concern.

Maybe she wants to keep her weight down? I don't know about "over there" but "over here" there are little kits for growing cat grass indoors. (Basically a little dish, some planting medium and some seeds.)

Yes, I might look into that over weekend. I will be starting my spray shortly for the scratching so I'm determined to sort the puke problem out too.
