I was reading a little about each and I think they sound very similar so what is the difference between the two?

Hello friend! The Buddhism and Hinduism are similar because Buddhism got it's roots from Hinduism. The founder of Buddhism, Gautama was actually born into a Hindu religion before he became the enlightened one :)

I haven’t really read Buddhism but since I am a Hindu, this much I can say is that Buddhism I think contains a lot of teachings and values of Hinduism….even Lord Buddha is thought of as a reincarnation of Lord Krishna who has promised to come to this world again and again to rid us of our sins. Lord Buddha is much revered by the Hindus and as the scriptures say, he came to this world when Hinduism was going thru a very dark phase of corruption and common people were going thru a lot of illusions and hardships. Gautam Buddha preached about the simple tenets of life, about introspection into one’s inner self, about simple living, meditation and so on…all these were very much a part of pure Hinduism but the priests and royalty had highjacked Hinduism for their own interest.
In fact, I think most oriental religions are same at some level…meditation, living in harmony with nature, self-introspection, awakening of the soul and so on.
