The right to bare arms against armed bears

Many here will know that I am vehemently opposed to the concept of the private right to bear arms - which I am disappointed to learn in the US does not include F-16 fighters, bazookas or missiles but is limited to relatively puny hand weapons. I am always keen to read more about the subject as I really do struggle with the wording of the Second Amendment which reads that it relates to freedom from potential tyranny and is interpreted as allowing self defence from the passing homicidal burglar etc. But that is not my question, simply the preamble. There is a thread on the BBC news site about open weapon carrying in Wisconsin which has descended predictably into name calling - my country's better than yours etc - and offers little in the way new perspectives. However, two people have come up with comments that amused me: Firstly, from the UK, maybe there should "the right to arm bears" and secondly from the US "the right to bare arms"! Would you go hunting if your quarry was an armed bear and all that you had was a bare arm?!

Nope. But I'd go hunting for my quarry if my bare arm was armed with a bear! LOL

Only the cubs. The adults would have me perched on THEIR bare arm! LOL

Now that sounds like my kind of hunting. Would the operate like falcons..... perched on your arm?

If we arm the bears, you just know there's gonna be a problem when the deer, turkeys and other living targets all want theirs. What about fish? Would be something finny about them toting weapons. As far as baring arms...absolutely! People are spending small fortunes adding graffiti to their bodies, let's see it while it still looks good. In 50 or 60 years when it's faded, stretched, sagging or otherwise flapping in the wind, then I'd prefer to shut my eyes and hope it goes away.

Fish of course would want torpedoes. Just imagine if the hunted began to hunt the hunter!!

Where would the fish carry those torpedos? That could certainly put a end to the whaling problem though...lol. If the hunted became the hunter? Then the 'sport' really would be a sport...wouldn't it?

I wouldn't hunt with bare arms, my arms are too skinny and I wouldn't hunt bears, armed or not, apart from anything else we haven't had many here since we started using bear spray. The two people who wrote these comments sound like the most sensible ones to me.

All true but the bears were mardy before the grandmother got to them.

The infamous bear hills of Beduff Nanna. I recall as a child they used to frighten me into eating my greens by telling me stories of the bare armed grandmother who bare knuckle fought with a bear until it was grizzly!

I heard some putz on the radio last week talking about wanting the right to openly carry weapons, like the ol' cowpokes did. His theory is that if everybody is armed, no one's going to go shooting people. Yeah, right. (Sorry, I forget what state he was from, other than paranoia...)

And you, instead of having just a badge, would have one of those programmable signs displaying your mood of the moment, right?

We can own f-16s...as long as they aren't weaponized or armed. (talk about taking the fun out of it) Now...armning bears.. Have you ever had an encounter with a bear? I don't mean in a zoo. They are already pretty well armed, lol. Tough as nails too. A small caliber weapon such as a 22 only pissses it off. A rifle is useless against it if it is fairly close to you because it can easily be on top of you before you ever get a shot off, they run a lot faster than most people realize. A lot of hunters carry a side arm along with their hunting rifle just for this reaason. I live in an area heavily populated by bear. These things are a nusence. I had one that kept crapping on my back porch....5 nights in a row. This same bear also wrecked my bbq gill. But, they are far more than just a nusence. They can be pretty dangerous. We had one in town here that actually busted through a womans front door and destroyed her kitchen. The game official told her that if she had been home at the time and she had encountered it in a closed space like her kithcen, she would likely have been killed.

I definitely would not want a bear armed and bare arms would result in a lot of mosquito bites! On a slightly different note, I think hunting is obsolete. I used to go hunting with my dad when I was young because we were too poor to buy meat most of the time. However, people now can usually get their meat from the grocery. I would not go hunting unless there was no other alternative.

I've been arming bears for a while. They like a nice set of armor ( see the Golden Compass for examples ). Unfortunately they usually pay in fish & berries...

Hello, Pikey. If I'd had enough vodka, I'd be up for it.But of course, I have my own secret WMD, and once I let rip, the armed bear would flee in terror. Perhaps I ought to hire myself out as a mercenary? My colon could solve all the world's problems. If I'd only been born 15 years earlier, Hitler would have run from Europe screaming. Not many people can stand up to it.

Perhaps we should arm the bears and all the other non-human creatures. We have been shooting them for long enough! I think it would be quite amusing to see the kangaroos here hopping around with shotguns, getting some back on the humans. I am taking full advantage also of my right to bare arms as it is always t-shirt weather here in sunny Queensland, Australia!

oh my gosh just thought of a title for a really awful sully movie here in the US where we had had some weird ones like the revenge of the killer tomatoes, why not the revenge of the Ants? tons of ants crawling into peoples' homes with all the screwy music in the background and people collapsing as they are covered with ants, town alarms going off, oh my what a story. Your comment about St Peter being a vengeful ant got my weird brain started.

We thought that was happening here a few weeks back Hatley. There were ants everywhere throughout the house as we have had weeks of rain. They must have known it was coming and set up camp in our home. They were even in our bed each night! Crazy Ninja Ants!

Oh poor old bears! I think there should be the right to Bear hugs. Or is it hug Bears? I'm not sure I want to be hugged back though, I have heard about Bear hugs being a bit too strenuous. Sweet, they don't know their own strength !

I'm opposed to arming bears and will not support an amendment to the constitution to do so. But now, I believe everyone should have the right to bare arms, especially in the summer, when it's 100 degrees outside.

hi pikey oh lord an armed bear, to me a bear is a wild animal and very unpredictable and in some of our states we have had people who had the childish mentality its okay to feed the bears, oh they are tame. wrong. wrong. they are wild animals and although they have just come into campgrounds in our state parks and just ate tourist food, if angered they can and do attack. now a bear with arms would boggle ,my mind. I cannot comeup with something better than the last mylotter said.. but if I had just bare arms I think I would start running and tell my feet, dont fail me now, just get me outta here fast. Idid once in Yellowstone park save the package of bacon the young bear was running off with by whomping him on the nose with a broom but his mama was not anywhere around either. a mama bear is dangerous even without arms. he he he.

Gosh you were brave Hatley. Even a small bear can be mean. I'd have let him have the bacon!
