It must be 10:00, Dyna has her squeaky toy

Does your dog have a predictable routine that you can count on? My big dog, Dyna, has quite a few toys...most of which are in various stages of being chewed up...but she has a favorite squeaky toy. I think it's a dragon. It's green, made of rubber that she could easily chew to shreds in five minutes but she's never so much as nicked it. Every night, at 10:00 she comes to my husband or me with this toy in her mouth. She'll move her head away...but only a little bit...because the game is to take the toy from her and toss it across the room. Dyna will run and get it, sometimes flip it up in the air, and will bring it back to one of us, ready to play this game again. Over and over again. I always feel bad if we're not home at 10:00 for some reason because I know that Dyna can tell that it's time to play with this toy...even though I'm fairly certain that she can't tell time. So, while I'm playing with Dyna and this dog drool covered toy, tell me if your dog has any quirky routines like Dyna has.

hi spalladino when I was in my early twenties and working in another town from my home town, I would go home on the Jack Rabbit express a bus line running in rural South dakota. Thedriver always leftme off at the road leading into our farm. the moment that bus stopped my dog Pat would start running that quarter to half mile road to meet me, she never missed, somehow that dog knew the time the bus would stop there and off she would go running hard to meet me. she was not a really big dog, about the size of a small collie and she would be panting by the time she reached the cow guard, and I wo uld wait for her then we would walk slower going back to the house. she never missed once.

That sounds like a great homecoming, Hatley. Dogs are certainly devoted...that's for sure.

Cookie is pretty easy going and will play just about any time I have the time for her but Gus has a routine. He knows that at lunchtime I'll leave the PC and play with him and the same at 5PM, the end of the workday. If I come to the computer between 5 and bedtime, he'll sit there and whine because that's HIS time! He never got the idea of fetching, or it bores him, he always wants to play tug. He has an inner clock so good that you could set a watch by him!

Dyna likes to pay tug, too, but the problem is that she's stronger than I am so she can pull me off the couch or across the room. My husband is usually in charge of that game. It does make me happy to see her playing and enjoying tormenting the cat because the battle we waged when she had parvo is still in the back of my mind. Speaking of inner clocks, if my husband and I stay up later than normal, Dyna will go ahead and go to bed. Sometimes she'll give us a look which is too funny.

Too funny! Cookie gives me that look about 10-11PM if I can't sleep and stay up. First she will sit in front of the TV--they know that when the TV goes off, it's bedtime. She'll look back as she heads upstairs, like she's admonishing me. Gus will just heave a big sigh and settle down in his basket by the fireplace till I'm ready to go upstairs. He won't go to bed without me. I know what you mean about the battle with Parvo--Gus was bitten by a rattlesnake and it was touch and go for a couple of days. Nothing like the long, drawn out fight that Dyna had but I know the feeling of gratitude we get when we think of such things.

Playing Outside - Goofy Dog in a Log
I can do relate to how you feel if you are not home at ten for Dyna. Are our dogs not the sweetest ever? Roxy & I are still getting routines down pat as my schedule has been the most hectic this past year but no matter what, come 8:30p.m. she is on my like white on rice for her bed time. I don't even have to set a clock. When she is up during the day, her blanket is out on the couch usually as this is where she naps during the day but come bed time, she wants one of her favorite toys, which she will pick up, after coming to me to tell me it is bedtime, so I grab her blanket and she happily trots off to the bedroom. (she sleeps in my bad) and away she goes. A new thing that happens, when we are home, is if I don't go to bed at the same time and am up for over an hour still, I will hear "thunk" as she jumps off the bed and comes to find me, usually with another toy because she wants to play. Our late night (for her) playtime sessions are the very best! It is like she revives and is redy to go. Problem is then the next day she yawns a lot. She is usually up by 4:30-5 a.m., at least to wake me. One time she sat right at my head and put her paw out onto my arm and woke me up. She is so funny sometimes. So I get up and what does she do crawls into the warm spot that I just got out of and makes herself comfy so to laze in bed for another hour or so. By 7:30a.m. we are out for her first walk, before breakfast, on a good day! About two years ago when I first got her, she was still quite young and needed to relieve herself more often. I would be working at home. Often times i would be sitting up, lengthwise on the couch. She would jump up and walk up beside me, proceeding to get on my lap between me and the laptop screen and sit down, looking at me, so to say, come on, lets go for a walk. She would do this every couple hours for at least three times. Our dogs certainly do know how to get our attention. These moments are priceless. Thank you for your discussion. I have enjoyed reading. Doggie antics can be so entertaining.

Animals are amazing like that...My dog knows when it’s five a.m. because she will get up and wait by the back door for me to open it. She is right on the dot every morning and I have often wondered how she knows what time it is, I think there’s a switch in there somewhere! Dyna sounds like a character and grabbing a toy at 10 each night is bizarre, cute though! Don’t you love all the slobber on the toy or ball they fetch back to you?

Oh yes, Paula, I love the slobber...gag. I think dogs have some kind of internal timer, too, and yes, Dyna is definitely a character. She's such a happy dog but sometimes she's hard to handle. When I take her for a walk...she takes ME.

My dog Cassie does that to me too, she is fine with my husband but with me she definitely has the upper hand (or paw!)

My dog doesn't have any routines like this. I just wanted to say I bet Dyna can be very entertaining! It sounds like so much fun to watch her and play with this toy with her. My dog can be very entertaining because she's so hyper, anyway. Because she's a Jack Russell Terrier, she can jump very high. I know my nephew called me on my cell phone one day and she just started dancing around at the music, lol! It was so cute! I bet my dog could be taught some tricks but I don't know how to teach them to her. Kathy.

Hi Kathy! Yes, Dyna is very entertaining...but she's also pretty big so she can be a handful! We just officially finished playing with her toy...now she's taking up the whole couch. The only command I've been able to teach Dyna so far is "sit" and she will "stay" for a couple of seconds but that's it. I don't think she's too bright but she's very good at tracking the cat all over the house.
