Do you use live Bait or Fake

United States

I know that this is the age old question. I just figured that it would bring up a good conversation. Do you use live/real bait or fake bait. If so why. Please explain if you are fishing in river, lake, ocean, etc. and why you use the bait that you use. Also add what fish you are fishing for. Thanks, Bryan

i live by boca grande florida where the tarpon tournies are, live crab for tarpon, when on the flatts for redfish and trout we use shrimp, you can get lots of hammerhead on shrimp in the flatts chasing the trout, little ones 5-6 footers. when i fish the lagoons and bays i seem to have luck with top water plugs, and on cloudy days lime green jigs. i live on a brackish canal that leads to the gulf, 1/2 fresh 1/2 salt water mixed, there i just use the leftover shrimp or get a bag of frozen shrimp from the supermarket and use that for red's and snook.

I have not ever fished in salt water. I have heard that once you have fished in the ocean/sea that fresh water fishing is well....not fun anymore. Thanks for your post, Bryan

i cant agree on that, there's nothing better than fishing a stream or lake up in the mountains. it's just that unless your going for northern pike that the fish are smaller than salt, last week in boca a guy got a 16 ft hammerhead that came up and cut a red in half, got caught on the fishes hook and the guy pulled it in, then he tied a rope to its tail and dragged it backwards with his boat to drown it, their a pest in the waters here always chomping fish you catch in half. fish on.

I would like to have seen that. This sounds like something that should have been recorded and put on a cable channel!

I use all sorts of baits. It depends on what kind of fish I'm fishing for. For Bass I use some live bait, but mostly artificial. I fly fish for trout. When I am fishing for channel catfish I will use chicken liver. In my opinion this is the best bait ever for channel cat. Just use what you feel will catch the fish and you enjoy using the most. No matter what bait you use, always remember that a bad day of fishing is always better than a good day at work.

I will agree with you on both the chicken livers and the worst day of fishing is still better than the best day at work. I just went fishing with my Mother for mothers day "which we do every year". We took a boat out on the lake and I paddled over to areas of the lake that we had never fished before because you can not walk there.

Your use of corn is interesting. I have only seen corn used for carp....but then again you did say that you catch carp. Thanks for your post. Bryan

What type of catfish do you typically fish for. I am not for sure what area of the world you are in and there are so many types of catfish.

i prefer use both, if the lives bait has run out, i use the fake bait, if in the river i prefer using the live bait, because i think the river fish prefer live bait rather than the fake bait, in the river, i want to catch the trout and catfish, in the sea i want to catch blue marlin....
