Nobody wants to see round women

At least that was a designer's response when he was criticized for only hiring extremely skinny models. This statement infuriates me. It's horrible. As a young woman who is self-conscious about my shape, this statement hurts even though I know that's not completely true. Now six months later, a fellow designer is proving him wrong by putting models of different shapes and age in his runway show. Do you think that the second designer is moving in the right direction? Do you think this will become a trend for future runways? Or is the first designer right: nobody wants to see round women?

i dont believe this idea of every lady going thinner, if you come to south africa, you will lots of big women and those are my kind of women, skinny women are only good for cat walks and modelling jobs but in real terms , men prefer the voluptious and highly naturally endowed women

Personally I hate to see skinny models but then that is my preference.I think the second designer is heading in the right direction .I mean how many many real women can actually be skinny and hence how many of these are actually representing real women.

I'm looking at it in different perspective, dating: In dating a fat woman many aspects come into play. One of them is how the society perceives a fat woman. The craze in the modern fashion industry has managed to paste badly a fat woman to a very great extent. It has managed to convince the world that fat is ugly. The definition of a beautiful woman has changed, who according to the fashion does not contain an iota of fat. It is lean and slender just something that can almost be blown away by the wind.

That is a very good point. There was a time when big, voluptuous ladies were beautiful. Now, not so. Who knows what the future standard of beauty in fashion will be.

unfortunately, the designer who said that famous quote WAS one of my favorites,Karl Lagerfeld, who heads the design teams for Chanel and Fendi.fashion industry is creating an illusion, that skinny is sexy.I don't think so.when I become a designer,I hope to change the fashion industry's outlook about curvy women.I will use this principle: clothes are marketable when worn with the body shaped to wear it.some dresses look great with women with big hips.some dresses look great with women with nice boobs.I salute Mark Fast (second designer) for showing that fashion is ageless and body-less.fashion is all about expressing yourself.

I always laugh when I hear this. I've been overweight for years, and in my time have attracted plenty of good looking, nice, and in a few instances, wealthy men. One of them in particular, MANY women were jealous of our relationship and tried to come in between. I don't think that it will become a runway trend, simply because while technology is fast to change and our lips are fast to speak, society is NOT fast to change in response to other changes. Many men and other women complain about more shapely women. I think it's a security issue with men. Many women who are plus size but not necessarily morbidly obese are more self sufficient and handy, therefore often times being more independent and less dependent on men; I think it damages fragile egos alike. I think that people also have a fear of not being able to control others around them, as well as fear of people and things that do not look as they do. My vote goes to the second designer, right or wrong, simply for having the huevos enough to try to push past stereotypes.

I love your response. It is so great. I do think you're right about the security issue when it comes to some guys. Thank you for your comment.

The second designer is moving the right direction. If he/she is really a good designer then he/she could make designs that would fit to any body build of a person. It is one way of proving his creativity by designing clothes that would look good to any size. There is a big possibility that it will become tren for future runways. Why not? Everyone always want to see something different. The second designer is absurd. Sometime round women are sexier than skinny.

I think the second designer is definately doing the right thing. We need to see more plus sized ppl on the runways. For far too long all we have seen are skinny mini's that think they are all that and a bag of chips. I won't even watch model shows on TV because they are all too skinny and have way too much fame most times. I say bring on the "ROUND" girls and stop with the skinny until further notice

vjenkins86 hi I think its great that that fellow designer is proving him wrong about round and other shapes of women and ages of women on his runways.this man is moving in the right direction and I so hope he starts a wonderful trend of having clothes for us less than perfect women of all ages.

Hi, I really don't like to see skinny women. it seems as if a skinny model is in dire need of some nutritious food. I am sorry, if I have hurt by my above statement. But thats what I really feel. A woman with a healthy appetite and a smile on her face is what I think most people would love to see.

I think a lot of the mediaeval thinking are on their way out. There are a lot of upsides to the designer for hiring skinny models, no food allowance and less materials needed for making their creations. But that is just not realistic especially in the United States where obesity is on the rise. Sure, a lot of people will ohhh and ahhh at their creation, but who will buy them? Look at the creations they make for their stores, and you will see that they cater to those with body size over 0. That designer was being hypocritical when he said that knowing that he will sell to obese women.

I personally think the first designer should be hanged on the washing line by his toes, to make him think twice before making such a statement again. The second designer will come far as he can think for himself. I won't even fit into those skinny models clothes and i only weigh 56 kg, but everybody should be able to buy designer clothing, so all shapes and sizes should be considered. Damn idiot. TATA.

i think that fashion is not only for the slim women. the second designer is right in doing his show. round women could appear sexy also if they are dressed appropriately eh? the designers who criticize round women will regret in not making dresses or clothing for oversized women, not all women that has money and the capability to buy designer clothes are slim. there are also wealthy round women in the world who could buy lots of clothes from them.

That anorexia and bulimia thing is nonsense... Round women are even more desirable than skinny girls. (not obesity, that is exageration)
