Hey! Opal here! I am in the middle of some really crazy weather right now and my lights are flickering really badly and I think we are going to lose all power very soon! Nooooo! What will I do without my Internet Connection-without myLot? Never mind the fact that I will be in the dark!lol What would you do if you lost power? What should I look forward to doing this evening in the dark? (Keep it clean)!

Hey Opal, I feel for you! This VERY rarely happens to me, I mean maybe once on a night time in the last 15 years or something lol! I got a few torches and candles in the living room, read some of a book. Played a portable games console if you have one! Hope it stays up for you though! Take care, Lee.

Hi again Lee! I just finished dinner and the lights are still on but, I am getting calls from alot of friends in the area who are all saying that the flickering lights are getting worse so we are ready! The power is out all around the area that I live in so it may just be a matter of time!

Get some candles and flashlights, some hot water a boiling (just in case you need it for something) and have some snacks ready for the grabbing. A blanket (if it's cold), some accordion folded paper (for a fan) if it's hot, and make sure the corded phone is working, or the cellphone is charged before the power goes out so you can call the power company.

Hey Cowgirl! I have the cellphone charging as we speak and it has been charing for almost 3 hours now! I have gas heat and gas stove so I'm good for heat anyway, I think? I have candles and flashlights ready! I am getting ready to serve dinner and just keeping my fingers crossed because the flickering is getting worse! I just had a major flicker now! Could be dark soon!

Oh yes, heh! It's 8:36 here so I wasn't really thinking of what time it is where you are. Get that dinner on the table, and I'd leave some leftovers on the counter for an hour. We always have the "open the fridge once" rule to get everything we want out right after the power goes out.

Hi Lakota! I happen to love candle light! But, since I have cats I worry about them knocking them over! So, I guess I would just take myself into my bed and read by "booklight"!

I hate when I lose power. I am lucky enough to not lose power too often here. But I do have many candles on hand for just such a situation. If I didnt have a house full of kids id run a bath and relax with a good book via candle light for the night. Good luck hope you dont lose power.

Hi minnie! I just feel so "powerless" (no pun intended) without my electricity! I don't like not being able to be here and not being able to watch tv (if I wanted to)! It's just the idea of not having the option! So far, I'm still in the light! But, the people around my area aren't so it could be just our luck or just a matter of time!

I hate it when I lose power. There is no light for the bathroom or kitchen. Both rooms are far from any windows. Wouldn't you know the two most essential rooms in the place, and if you don't have light you're in big trouble. Sherlock sees better than I do in the dark. I guess I could train him to bring me a Coke.

Hi Amber! I hate it when we lose power! It's been a long time since the last power outage, but the lights are really flickering and some of my friends are already without power in different parts of my County so it isn't looking good! The flickering is getting worse so I am as ready as I can be! The winds are very strong and the tree limbs are breaking so who knows what will happen next! Going to eat dinner before anything else happens!

We're having real wacky stormy weather here too, been raining all day/night and real windy--I've been hearing on the news that there are a lot of power outages and keeping my fingers crossed things will be all right. Here's hoping your power stays okay and that you can have your internet and mylotting--as for what to do if the power does go off..mmmm...maybe read by candlelight? Today/night perfect time to just stay snuggled in bed...in fact I got up later than usual myself...LOL

I've played cards, real cards....solitaire is funny when you play it online and then dig out a deck of cards. My kids always liked playing hid & seek in the house when it was dark (with the stipulation that there were rooms they couldn't hide in) the best place one of their friends found was lying on top of my counter. Get a flashlight and clean something? a few candles, a pen & some paper & you could write ideas for the next time you're able to get on mylot for future discussions. I read by candle light, or just go to bed early so I can get up early and hope I can find a way to keep warm.

hi opal26 or is it 3, Iget confused, are you and the other opal related by any chance? hope you have your computer on a surge protector if you have an electrical storm there. well if it went dark here I would have to use my handy dandy med, sized flashlight as I have no candles here in Gold crest. I would read til its time to go to bed then just do that, but I sure would miss my mylotting. I dont have any game thingy so reading would be my only hope. get yourself lots of candles and have matches ready in case. hope the lights stay on for you though.

We make a game of it when the power goes out. We light loads of candles or the touch lights and tell ghost stories or try to think of how many things we use electricity for that we really take for granted. You know, like when you decide since the lights went out, you'll just make a pot of coffee...except the coffee pot uses electricity, too! If it's cold, we pile loads of blankets and quilts on and tell 'warm' stories to keep the chill at bay. We also use it as a great excuse for finishing off the ice cream (wouldn't want it to melt. No matter that it would take HOURS for that to happen.). And last, but not least, we all bed down in the same room, so no one is afraid of being in the dark at bedtime.

I said keep it clean because me and my roomy aren't getting along and there wasn't going to be anything going on except book reading!lol

I hate power outages, but I deal with them as best we can. I get to light candles, and just spend time with my hubby talking or listening to battery-powered radio. It would drive me crazy not to have some kind of sound. I have to have a t.v. or radio or something. And, batteries are my best friend. My laptop also has a battery on it and I could use it a little bit without power. No internet, but the computer can still be used . I have some music on it and a couple of downloaded movies as well too that I could watch if I really wanted to watch something.

Hi kaylachan! I forgot about my radio! And I don't have batteries for it! Thanks for reminding me! Now I have to make sure that I do get batteries for it and make sure that I keep it ready just in case! I do have my CD player at least! I have a laptop, but it isn't up and running yet so that won't work this time! I guess I still need to do some prep work in case I have power outages in the future!lol

If you think that there will be a brownout or power will be gone soon, charge everything now, such as psp, cellphone, laptop, ipods, etc. because atleast when power is gone you can still play games with your PSP, listen music with your ipod, call or text some friends so that you can hang out and entertain yourself with your laptop applications. so be prepared. ;p

Hi kyleuy! I did charge my cellphone, but it is just a regular cell without any of the extras! And my friend gave me his refurbished laptop, but hasn't finished connecting the router and charged the battery so won't be able to use it yet! So, I will only be able to read a book! Hopefully next time I might be caught in a blackout I will be alot more prepared!lol

we had the lights go out Friday night for about 30 seconds, felt like 5 minutes. I was just about to get up and find a flashlight when the power came back on. if the weather had been bad, I could've understood it, but it wasn't, very strange

it is really strange, we've had several blackouts, but never, well - hardly ever (sung to the Gilbert and Sullivan tune) - during bad weather, but the worst black out in Austin was on June 11th, 1983, when a small animal took out most of the city and suburbs!

As I said earlier, we had the storm here yesterday. It appears to be increasing in intensity as it goes further north. I hope ALL is well with you & the storm is hauling butt across your area. I can't stand it when the electricity goes out & I can't get into myLot. It makes me feel like I'm losing my mind when it first goes off!!! It takes my brain several minutes to acknowledge that I've actually disconnected from the internet...then comes the panic attack!!! We lost our electricity yesterday...fortunately, it was for only a couple minutes, but it felt like hours!!! Hope this is finding you sane & safe!!! Hope this finds you WELL!!!

Hi missy! I probably would have just tried to read! There was no way that anyone would have been able to go out in those 50 - 60 mph winds! They declared my city a disaster area and told people to stay inside and off the roads since alot of the parkways and roads were closed due to downed trees and powerlines!

Believe me you will survive without power and the internet. It's tough but can be done! IN late Jan of this year and the first of Feb. a heavy ice storm hit us and we were without power for 6 days. We had to buy a generator and the roads were icy and we were detoured round the towns and then when they hooked up the generator, it blew out my computer! OH horrors !! but I managed. I had a a laptop that I am using now and its ok but would rather have a desk top and will when they get cheaper. So yes, I'm keeping it clean ! BUT , when your lights are flickering like that, TURN OFF THAT COMPUTER OR THE POWER OUTAGE COULD WIPE OUT THAT COMPUTER. Even tho I had mine on a surge protector when the lines went down I still lost it. Always turn off that computer at the slightest site of a storm. Be wary of what matters most.

Hi quita! Thanks for the tip! I did turn off the computer because I was getting nervous! I don't trust the surge protector either! I ended up not losing power but, the storm knocked out power all over the tri-state area near where I live! I just decided to be safer rather then sorry! My laptop isn't up and running yet because my "computer guy" who gave me his refurbished one hasn't finished setting up the router and stuff yet! So, I will be more prepared in the future!

Hiya Opal, Hope you have got your power back on by now. What would I do on a dark night well first of all I´m very lucky to be able to use Gas at the moment to cook as I have had electricity to cook with before and this place is famous for power cuts. Well being able to cook with Gas I would make something very quick as with having no light to use things would be a bit more dicey. I would put the Radio on and listen to that and cuddle up under a warm quilt with a nice warm drink after eating and try to talk to these lot who would probably be stuck on their mobile phones to their friends talking bemoaning and bewailing about the misery that had struck in their lives (grin). The last time a power cut struck they were in the middle of their beauty sessions in the bathroom hence no light no mirror nada nothing. Me being used to this kind of thing and that does not mean to say I welcome it I had to put up with almost 4 months of continual power cuts, going to work in the dark coming back from work in the dark in one of the most dismal winters on record. No television after ten o´clock the power was rationed out and how. But we did have a Gas cooker so that was a Godsend. For more cream to be added on we had continual Snow falls we got rid of one fall and back it came after a nice Sunny Day this continued for almost four months so I have experienced quite a few power cuts apart from the ones we have had here up to three days at a time with no light or water but thats nothing to what they are putting up with in Girona the other side of Spain the old electric pylons fell down last week like a set of dominos and has left thousands of people with no power all because they did not want to renew them. However People use their own genius when it comes to this happening they are using the snow to keep their food fresh the very thing that caused the pylons to come down and lots of people are using social clubs and football stadiums to get together and are able to eat and keep warm because although it´s on the coast it can be very cold there indeed. Take care hugs Sue.xxx

Hi Sue! Great to hear from ya! Wow! Your plight sounds a whole lot worse than mine! I feel really badly because I was one of the very fortunate ones who didn't lose my power, but many of my friends and others in the surrounding states did! And it is now Monday here and some are still without power for the 3rd day! There were huge trees ripped out of the ground, some ripped out of cement sidewalks and hit houses! It is a disaster area in many areas so I feel so terrible that I only had slight brownouts after all! But, it did teach me to get ready for the Summer when the power can really be iffy! I hope that yours stays on too! And I also have a gas stove so cooking is ok too! Hugs back at ya! Love, Leslie

Hiya Alice, Yes some of the powercuts when they do appear last for quite a bit and it´s usually when you have the Dinner to do and when you are getting ready to go out. It´s seems as if they know how to time it. Here´s what they could look like and something similar to what they have looked like when they were trying to do their hair and other stuff to go out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEwe1GGWNtQ Favourite time for power cuts Saturday night not frecuent but wreaks havoc anywhere.
