Have you ever used Facebook to solve a problem or make a decision?

My step-daughter, who is 32 and lives 1,000 miles away needed some advice on whether to go to the ER earlier (around 11:00pm) or wait until the morning and go to Urgent Care. She recently had surgery to remove a skin cancer on her stomach. She posted on facebook that one end of the row of stitches was red, swollen and tender to the touch. My first response to her post was to call me, which she did, but she was still unsure whether the ER was the right choice while we talked and while a few of her friends responded. Of course, my husband wanted her to to to the ER immediately but she always considers him to be dramatic so his opinion didn't carry too much weight with her. Still unsure and unconvinced, she decided to post pictures. That was very helpful because we could all see that one side was clearly red and swollen so we nagged her some more. I ended up calling her back because I could tell that she was making excuses because she was tired...not that I blame her since it was late. Between my nagging over the phone and her friends nagging her on facebook, she finally gave in and said she was going to the ER. I'm sure it was very late when she got home and she didn't call back so, if it was infected, I guess the ER handled it. My step-daughter uses facebook as an outlet for many things and I'm glad she does because it alerts me to situations and problems where she needs a "mom" and hers passed away before I met her. So, at times like earlier tonight, I can put on my "mom" cap and talk to her as her mother would have, instead of as the friend I usually am. Does anyone else use Facebook to help make decisions or to seek advice from your friends and family?

Hi spalladino! I think that it was so wonderful of you to help out your step-daughter like that! And it is great that she has you and Facebook friends to rely on! I am not a member of Facebook, but I keep getting invited all the time! I have my reasons for not wanting to get involved in another site! Mylot is enough for me and it takes up enough of my time as it is! I am just glad that she made the right decision to go to the ER and get it taken care of! And she is also luck to have such a great step-mom! Hugs, Opal

I'm glad that you gave her that advice. Before I got my appendectomy incision infected, I would have told you that you were over-reacting but now that I know how dangerous such things can be and how much difference catching it early can make, I applaud you for your advice! I only use Facebook to keep up with my two sons, my sister in law and a few friends. I don't post much, just read. If I had a problem I could not handle I would call my mom. Even though I'm 55, my mom still knows more than I do!

I am glad that you make good use of facebook. My colleagues usually use it to announce to the whole world what they are doing, which places they are visiting etc etc. I prefer to use it to keep in touch with old lost friends. I am not an avid fan an facebook and use it the least possible. I don't like to expose my dirty linen in public. I mean if I want to get personal I prefer to use email.

I have a Facebook account and, although it has been great for me to catch up with people I haven’t seen for many years I confess that I don’t use it very much at all. I tend to share my thoughts on MyLot or through my articles and as far as personal issues with specific people I rather talk in person or over the phone. I do love your story though and I guess that is partly what Facebook is about for friends to come together in times of need as well as socialising. Hope your step-daughter is feeling much better.

I never do that. Filipinos in the Philippines are lucky because we have sets of friends and relatives anywhere near who could just come to see us anytime

I don't think a site can help you make a decission. It is a personal thing. It can influence a little I think, but mainly facebook haven't helped me to make a decision till now. But no one knows...maybe one day.

I never have used facebook for advice. I mainly use it to keep up with friends and family members who live far away and don't get to see very often. There is also a discussion on there called "You Know You Grew Up In Jasper, Alabama If....." I grew up in Jasper, Alabama and I feel like I've posted more than anybody on that discussion site, LOL! That's how much I've enjoyed it. I'm so glad that your stepdaughter went to the emergency room after all. I hope she's doing much better now. Please keep us posted. Kathy.

Quite frankly, I never used any social website to solve my problem, however I've used these websites countless of times to receive advice from my closest friends and relatives.vI think it's pretty useful in somewhat extreme situations. The latest earthquakes in Haiti and Chile have just proved that.
