I just spent the morning setting up Hubby's and my yearly check ups with the Doctors. I have no worries about these check ups, at the most they are unpleasent but by the time I was through I was in a cold sweat about it. Do you have yearly check ups and if so doees it upset you to do this?

Hey pat~ I go to my doctor for so many different things during the year that we just never get around to the "full yearly exam" and I know that I really need that! I had all 4 grandparents, my father and brother die from heart disease and I still haven't had a cardiogram in years! I do have to go for bloodwork every four months for liver values because I am taking Lipitor for high cholesterol and I take high blood pressure meds too! In fact my last blood test showed something wrong with my liver and I still haven't gone for the bloodwork! Will be going soon!

Quit putting that off, your liver is one thing that can heal it's self if given a chance. Get that test. There is no sense paying for and taking meds if you end up destroying your liver and die anyway.

dear pat, i wish i could do too. i have had a few checks (complete blood chem) but not the general check up which probably is what you are saying. with these it would probably cost 3-4 thousand pesos. philhealth (insurance deducted from salary) does not cover a complete check up. one has to be hospitalized first before availing. isnt that unfair? i want to have a complete check once a year and it upsets me that i am forced to contribute to that but not get the services. ann

In our country the insurance company have found that it's cheaper to give people a yearly exam then to only treat for serious problems. CBC is a good way to check for a lot of illnesses.

dear pat, thats true. but it is not covered still by our insurance unless i am hospitalized. that's what i am complaining about as unfair. people who are hospitalized are those already sick and sometimes already terminal. so when one is able to avail it.. (say once in 5 years for example) it is sometimes already late. because it has gone from treatable to serious. yeahhh! too bad. saving is even better because you get to use it while this, it is no longer returned to you if unused. i just dont believe anymore in insurance in this country. you might call that serious. well, sorry. thats what i feel. thank you for this discussion. ann

I have done it only once in my lifetime and that was donkey years ago. It was good to have thorough medical check to detect early and potential health hazard. I am thinking of doing it since age is catching up and it is around this time that diseases are fond of licking on the aging body. Prevention is better than cure.

I misread your response and to me it read "I have done it only once in my lifetime and it was on a donkey." Well I laughed and reread the response, but thanks for the laugh even if it was unintended.

I am male 76, and I haven't had a medical checkup for 32 years. I am a Yogi, and have learned to look within. My health is carefully monitored, (by myself) as is my diet. All the food I buy is carefully checked for unhealthy additives. I never eat precooked or prepared food, preferring home cooked meals. My weight has remained the same for 40 years, and I can still wear a belt I bought in 1953 (just one notch further out) I do a 45 minute Yoga workout every morning 6 days a week. A Doctors job is to find disease, (and he is damn good at his job) I am never sick, and I want to keep it that way, so I stay away from the doctor!

I think I need to keep up at this more. There was one time where I skipped medical check-up 2 years in a row. I think that's not so good, and considering the fact that it's just good to play safe and go for a general check-up, I think I'm going to do it soon. Perhaps.. I'll see how. So far, I'm feeling very healthy and I couldn't be more happier than that, but just you know... you never know this kind of thing. It's best to detect something sooner rather than later, but I always pray for a good health.

I understand how it is when you feel healthy, but some things are hidden and only show up when they are advanced. Get your check up, please

Nope, I go in for so many other things, I figure that if something's up , they'll find it. I do go for my annual female checkup though.

In the UK, we have a free health service that is supposed to deal with illness as it arises, so we don't have annual checks unless they are required for career purposes. As a taxi driver my hubby had to have a medical every three years until he reached the age of 65 and every year after that to ascertain that he was fit for the work. Up till last year he was paying £75 for that (about $125 I reckon) and it certainly wasn't a complete heath check. I believe you can buy a BUPA health check for about £250, but I have too mnay other things to budget for. Not sure where I'd find money like that. If I'm worried about any symptoms I can discuss them with my doc for free.

I wish you both nothing but good health and I do understand the cold sweats. I use to have a yearly checkup when I had medical coverage.I would get so nervous and upset. I do eat good and take care of myself. I eat healthy foods with lots of fruits and veggies. I don't eat red meat, in fact I only eat chicken and turkey once in awhile. I don't eat fast foods and I'm not underweight or overweight. I really hate going to the doctors so that is why I take care of myself as much as possible. I haven't been sick for a couple of years, Thank God. So until I feel sick or feel something is wrong I probably won't be going anytime soon. God willing!

I get a health check-up every 6 months. I have heard of people getting them done once a year every year, and they think they are fine, but the doctor tells them something was found. If they went about business acording to how they felt then things might have been too late. I can think of one individual that discovered from this check-up on a yearly basis that cancer of the liver was found. I will not go into any more details about this than to say that check-ups are important.

This is true, but not everyone can afford this. We have insurance but it only pays part and only once a year for regular checkups.

Get a complete check-up EVERY year! Please! No matter your age, play it safe. if you are an adult.. go every year because every person is different and there is NO set age for serious things to happen. Men get prostate cancer at age 21. I know because I see these patients come through from time to time. I see women with cervical cancer as young as 27 (younger from what other people tell me). I get one every year but I want to put out there that I use to put them off every two years or so and just get by with a regular check-up however, my fiance' has just done a regular check-up for the past three years and went for his complete last week.. since then, we have had two Urologist appointments because his PSA levels are very high. We are hoping it is one of many simple things but considering his dad had prostate cancer (PSA levels being high is a big indicator when they look for cancer of the prostate) and his dad waited so long that he had to have his prostate removed, we are a bit nervous. So I cannot stress enough to please, please get a complete check-up every year to catch early signs of many different diseases, complications and the like. Many serious things can be prevented or dealt with if caught in time.. many, can cause serious, irreversible and permanent damage if not caught in time. Without having had complete check-ups each year.. they cannot know how high his levels jumped from one time period to another. which would have been helpful in knowing. since they did not know. he has undergone many unpleasant tests. Look after your health people. it truly is precious!

In a perfect world this would be available to everyone, but the costs of a complete check-up is well over $300.00 with lab and xray costs above that. Not many working people can afford that and all those who have no work can't do it at all. There should be affordable exams that just do a few exams that would show any signs that needed more investigations. Maybe written online questions followed by a CBC for general blood work. Women need pap smears and men a PSA type test, but couldn't these hands on test be done by Techs not Doctors? That way the Doctors would only be called upon for the expensive exams if something unusual showed up.

Personally since I have Diabetes and right now dealing with this Chronic wound that is taking it's time to heal, I am always seeing a Doctor and asking questions if there is anything else going on right now. I find seeing a Doctor and being proactive about it, is one of the Best things you can do. I feel it never hurts to get a yearly check up and have Blood work done, etc. to make sure that everything is alright as well. It can actually add extra yrs. to your life.

I have never had a yearly checkup. In fact, except for my appendectomy last May, I haven't been to a doctor for four years! Probably not a good idea at my age, especially since I was told 4 years ago that I have very high cholesterol, but I just haven't wanted to pay for something like that. I really should go, just so I will have a doctor to go to when I do need one--I don't have a doctor here.
