Can we be both Spiritual, and Religious?

Stairway to Heaven - On the Spiritual Plane these are the steps to Heaven

As I was pondering this question, I checked it out via my online dictionary, and surprisingly, under Religion, I found no mention of Spirit, and under Spirit, I found no mention of Religion. It seems to me there is a definite division of ideas here. Rather than being Religious, ( Christian or Islamic) I am Spiritual. I believe that God the Father does not play favorites, and did not choose His Own Son to be special. I believe He designates all of His Children as Special. So my Question is ~ Is it possible to be both Religious and Spiritual, or must we choose one, or the other?

Well religion will not save you....Spirituality will.....To me when you say religion, you are speaking of man made buildings with a name attached....Like i was raised in a certain religion, does not mean you are spiritual.....Being spiritual is a relationship with God, thats the only way you can become saved...Just my opinion..........

Ok maybe i did not make myself clear--Sorry...So the building part we agree on......You ask saved from what? well we were born in sin as the Bible says , but God is our heavenly father and he forgives us for whatever we do that is wrong, we are his children...I believe we are men/women whoever are made of flesh and are likely to commit a sin, such as lying., stealing, maybe doing something that we are ashamed of,but i do feel that we must ask God to forgive out wrong doings for him to forgive us..The Bible states that if we sin we are to ask for forgiveness and our heavenly father is faithful to forgive us.....I supposs it is like our children....My children have lied about things and been disobedient and they have came to me and said "Mom i am sorry and certainly i say you are forgiven and i love you..Thank you for being faithful..As you said if our children burn down our house, of course we do not burn them, but i do expect for them to say "Mom i am sorry for what i did..Thats is what i meant when i speak of a relationship with God...I have also ask God to help me in certain area's of my life & he has come through for me,,,,,and i immedialy say to God Thank you for your help.....

While we may not be on the same page, I believe we are on the same chapter! Man made religions, with buildings attached, are not for saving, this I can accept! But we differ on the "Saving." I want to ask, "saved from what?" My Spiritual Father is a God of Love, A Supreme Being, who loves Absolutely, with an Absolute Love which demands Absolutely Nothing in return. Therefore all sin is forgiven before it is committed. We are His small (young) children playing with fire. God is a loving parent who forgives instantly and completely, when we burn down the house.Do parents burn their toddlers caught playing with fire? What Father in Heaven would burn his children in Hell forever?

Also let me add this as far as little children , i feel they have to grow enough to understand right from wrong before they are accountable for anything...

You don't give your definitions or meanings of both religious or spiritual so it's hard to know what you mean. To me someone can be both. They can have a strong belief in their religion and have a spiritual connection with what they believe in. I don't hold much with religion but I have what I think of as a spiritual connection with my surroundings. I pray to my higher power and turn to Mother Earth in prayer in times of need because that's where I feel a connection.

A great discussion actually. I've bookmarked it to study later. I think the answers and your comments are all quite meaningful and revealing.

Well its hard to pin down religion and give a specific meaning, because it means different things to different people, same with the word Spiritual. This is something that each individual must figure out for yourself. I think if you read this post carefully, you might be able to figure out what each of the words in Question, mean to me!

Being religious is a precondition of being spiritual, without religion spirituality is just an ego trip all the best urban

Spirituality concerns itself globally with matters of the spirit. It is not the same as religion because you don't have to be religious to have a spiritual nature. Many people that do not believe in any one religion are quite often seekers, and are spiritual at heart. Agnostics, people that believe in God and spirit, but don't fall into a religious category, would be considered spiritual.

There may be some who don't approach spirituality through religion but most are on an ego-trip. "Oh, look at me, I'm spiritual!" all the best urban

They are very different things. However, can we be one with out the other, gets a little gray for me. I am not going to look up the exact meaning, but to me to be spiritual means to in touch with your spirit and the spirit of the people around you. And to be "religious" means to follow a certain religion. Some religions teach us to be whole we must find our spiritual selves, and some don't. So it is quite possible to be both spiritual and religious, it just depends on which religion you decide to follow, and of that religion, which sect or denomination, Sadly there are far too many of these and everyone thinks they are right, and most other people are wrong... I honor, and appreciate you.

Spirit to me, means: of, or pertaining to the spirit or soul, as distinguished from the physical nature: a spiritual approach to life. Religion is man-made, while Spirit is from God. Religions are all over the map with ideas, while spirit is incorporeal.

Yes, and many are based on being more in touch with spirit, such as Buddhism, the ultimate goal of which is to leave the physical plane, and become a spirit in the next stage of your souls life. Because you have learned all there is for your spirit to learn in your many reincarnations of this world, so you may leave the physical behind, and be in Nirvana spiritually. You have a very good definition, and I believe as you do that our spirit is very different from our physical selves. I don't agree with your concept of all religion being man made, while many of them are, and even ones that aren't get altered based on the ego's of the few. The Bible in my opinion is the inspired word of God, I understand that we share a different point of view on this matter, and that is fine, we have agency that we may choose as we wish. And being the inspired word of God, would make that God made, not Man made, and I would suggest that it is the devils work to pull man away from this believe. and by so doing, drawing man away from God, to have his Ego sated. But, I am as yet, undecided on exactly which path I will devote myself to anyways, and I am just learning of the many things that there are to learn about in reference to Religion and Spirituality. I have many more things to investigate, these are just the opinions I have formed thus far. I love the way your discussions make me think. I honor and appreciate you. Chysom.

I thought both things are related, being spiritual and religious are the same. Isnt it? Definitely we can be both if two things are related to each other. I just dont understand that dictionary you looked into and not find some relationship between religious beliefs and spiritual things.
