Best off-season acquisition?

What was the best move the Yankees made during this off-season? In my opinion it was getting Javier Vazquez. if he can continue to be durable like has been and get the high strikeout totals then he is the perfect answer, short term anyways, to the back end of the rotation problem we had last year. After he's gone next year we'll go out and sign Cliff Lee, no problem. What's your opinion?

If the Yanks can keep Nick Johnson healthy, he could prove to be the biggest off-season addition. Johnson is a very good fielder (not as good as Tex, but how many are?) and is considered to have one of the best "batting eyes" in the game, along with hitting around the .300 mark most of his career. He seems to be pulling the ball a lot more in spring training and he could help us to get over the loss of the aging Matsui (no disrespect to Matsui, he was a Yankee warrior during his time in NY) I think Hughes gets the nod in the 5th spot. Acevedes is too valuable in the pen. He can go long, set-up, and be an emergency spot starter or move into the rotation. Joba seems to have the make-up to be a set-up man and if his confidence isn't where it should be, the Yanks have other options that could hold down the fort until Joba is ready (personally, I'm hoping Joba has a great year...just in case the Yanks have questions about him being a head-case and would like to try to deal him) I like Javy Vazquez and I think his first go-round in NY will help him this time around. He's not a #1 or #2 starter, and there is little pressure on him this time around. He's a vet pitcher that can give the Yanks a lot of innings and is quite capable of winning 15-17 games for the Yanks. Just my guess...Damon and Matsui spend a lot of time on the DL and both have "off" years.

Hopefully keeping Johnson off the field will also keep him healthy. If he stays off the DL then picking him up will be a steal. I agree with you about Hughes, seems like the organization wants him there and Joba in the bullpen, not the worst scenario to have though :-)

i would say it is a wait and see on Javier Vasquez as i remember the last time he was a New York Yankees pitcher was game 7 against Boston and he gave up a grand slam to Johnny Damon to blow open the game so that is the last memory i have of him with the New York Yankees so he will need to do a lot in my mind to erase that picture from my thoughts, but winning last year's world series definitely helps to lessen that blow a little. I am curious to see how we do with all that we lost in Hideki Matsui, Johnny Damon, Melky Cabrera and some of our pitchers. I want to see how Curtis Granderson plays in centerfield after the big trade with the Detroit Tigers and if he can provide a little pop out of the lead off spot and maybe cut down on the strikeouts. It will be interesting to see how they handle the Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes situation to see who starts and who will be in the bullpen both have been great out of the bullpen at times and average as starters so it will be interesting to see how that plays out. It is nice to be the defending champions for the first time since 2000 and i hope we can relive some of last year's magic when we had all of those come from behind and walk off wins. It was a great way to christen the new stadium wow what a place they have built there i only hope that i can afford to come see it someday.

I look at Vazquez's stats over his career, 10 straight years of double-digit wins, has pitched over 200 innings for that time except in '04 when he "only" pitched 198, and the last 3 years he's averaged 217 SO per season. He's a different pitcher now I believe and with the Yankees offense behind him it can only help. The one loss that I think will hurt them is Damon, his speed and offensive skills in the 2-hole as well as his clubhouse presence will be sorely missed. Matsui is already hurt out in Anaheim so while missing his pop in the bat, it doesn't do you much good of he's on the DL. As far as the 5th starter goes, one name to look for so far this spring is Alfredo Aceves, he is the clubhouse leader in my book though it will probably be Hughes over Chamberlain who is clearly struggling this spring.
