My Cody is Sleeping Alot

For all you dog lovers who have lost a dog to old age, did you find that they slept the better part of the day? My cody which is a shih tzu will be 12 in May and I have noticed that in the past couple of months he is sleeping more then he is awake. Plus he only goes out twice a day to do his business. My family's telling me he is on his way out.

That is one symptom of old age and your dog may indeed be on his way to leaving you. If he's not in pain or suffering an illness, let him do what is natural. He's had a good long life and given you a lot of love. Just be ready to help him when it's time for him to go. My rule is that when they are in pain or cannot walk, it's time to take them to the vet for a fatal injection--which is quick, painless. It hurts you a lot but it's a mercy for your pet.

Oh yes I would never let him suffer that would not be fair to him and I couldn't watch him suffer. He's healthy at this time its just the sleeping that has me wondering. Thanks!

My dog is getting there. I think he still has a couple of years still. He sleeps but he still plays and has energy to play. I notice he feels better/energized when he has had a long nap(when we are out of the house/everything quiet). I'm getting ready for when that time comes. I think it will be harder to tell my kids though because my dog has been there since they were born, he is somehow part their earliest childhood memories. They(especially my daughter) also have expressed concerned about him and they don't want him to die. I try to tell her that he is fine and he is not going to die now and then I talk about something else to change the subject.

I truly understand about the kids because my granddaughter has known Cody since she was born. She is always petting him and saying "I love you Cody", so this will be hard on both of us if and when he leaves this earth.

It does not mean he is on his way out, he is just getting a bit slower due to age
Like Gissi is slowing down to, it is just the age
So do not think that way just respect him as he needs the energy he is collecting while sleeping
He will be ok

We have a shih-tzu but she is only 4 years old so she isn't near old age yet. When I was younger our family pet that we got when I was 6 years old was a miniature schnauzer. That mini schnauzer lived a long time as she didn't pass until long after I had moved out! I think my mum said she lived for just about 20 years! Hopefully you get that long out of Cody! I say as long as he isn't suffering he should be good for a while yet hopefully!

Oh that would be a miracle if Cody lived another 8 years. That would make him 140 in dogs years.

Thanks and I hope your dog lives a lot longer too. I just wish if there was truth to dogs sleeping more when they get older or are they on there way out. I'm hoping its just because they are older.

I think I say 10 rules of having a dog. It's such a touching story of a dog and it's owner and the promise they made for each other. I think what i saw in the movie. The dog wasn't able to move and couldnt even get up. It's really very upsetting... The movies is korean btw.
