Catholic Nuns Support Health Care Bill!

Of course, Rep. Bart Stupak said he doesn't pay attention to the nuns, he listens to the Bishops and "Focus on the Family"... WASHINGTON – Catholic nuns are urging Congress to pass President Barack Obama's health care plan, in an unusual public break with bishops who say it would subsidize abortion. Some 60 leaders of religious orders representing 59,000 Catholic nuns Wednesday sent lawmakers a letter urging them to pass the Senate health care bill. It contains restrictions on abortion funding that the bishops say don't go far enough. The letter says that "despite false claims to the contrary, the Senate bill will not provide taxpayer funding for elective abortions." The letter says the legislation also will help support pregnant women and "this is the real pro-life stance." : http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100317/ap_on_go_co/us_health_overhaul_catholic_nuns Good for them! They've confirmed what I've always said about what "pro-life" truly means. Bart Stupak and however many followers he has are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites! Annie

Not only are many sisters in favor of the bill, so are hundreds of Catholic hospitals. On Saturday, the chief executive of the Catholic Health Association, which represents more than 600 hospitals that do not provide abortions as a matter of conscience, wrote on the group's Web site that although the legislation isn't perfect, it represents a "major first step" toward covering all Americans and would make "great improvements" for millions of people. :http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/03/18/holy-war-erupts-catholics-abortion-language-health-care/

Thank you for the link and the info! I think we can all agree that the bill isn't perfect but it IS a first step and I think we NEED to take that first step or health care reform will be "scrapped" and put on the shelf for another decade or so and costs will go up another 100-200% and millions more will be uninsured. Well that's their business. Frankly I can think for myself and don't need a bunch of nuns to tell me what I should or shouldn't support. Regardless of who supports it there is not ONE PERSON who can explain to me how the federal government FORCING people to buy health insurance is constitutional. As such, if you support this bill you are either ignorant of, or oppose the constitution of the U.S.

I can think for myself also but I found it interesting that a group of nuns would come out in favor of the bill considering the lies being told by the Republicans and Democrats like Bart Stupak. I guess the courts will have to decide whether certain provisions of the bill are Constitutional or not. Annie

I wish I could have faith in the courts, but they've largely been a rubber stamp regarding such unconstitutional issues as Roe v Wade and the Patriot Act.

This is interesting. There is so much on Mylot about the evils of healthcare reform and how Americans don't want it. Then this! I wonder, could it be that Americans do want the bill are just not so noisey as those who do not. The BBC recently had a thread and most of the Americans responding on that site were in favor of Obama's efforts to revamp the healthcare system. So, the Americans who read news on the BBC web site and the nuns are supporting the bill. I'm in good company!

Yes, WE are in pretty good company! I know there are more in favor of the bill than we'd be led to believe by the media and myLot. I mean, EVERYONE I know couldn't be nuts, could they? Annie

I agree. I honestly don't see how an uninsured person dying of a lack of health care is better than that same person getting care, and surviving. Pro-life doesn't just mean being against abortions.

If I want legal advice and information, I go to a lawyer. If I want information on how to fix my car, I go to a mechanic. If I want information on a piece of legislation, I go to the legislation, with all due reverence to the Sisters, I don't get the information from nuns.

Well, if they think that it won't subsidize abortion, they don't know enough about it. There are many people who are in the same position. I am not a hypocrite. If I took a pro-life stance and yet knew that my money paid for someone's insurance which provided abortion coverage, I would be a hypocrite by paying for something I say I don't believe in. I don't care about what a bunch of nuns think about the health care reform bill. I make up my own mind. So, you're in favor of religious groups shaping government policy?

Not at all, not even Focus on the Family. If I remember correctly, some didn't even want Focus on the Family to buy airtime during the Super Bowl. However, this discussion seems to draw a distinction between the importance of one religious group's opinions and those of another religious group while touting the favored opinion as a reason to support a specific policy. I am asking if the poster means to support a government policy with this religious opinion?

Should religious groups be prohibited from expressing their opinions?

No, I'm not in favor of religious groups shaping public policy and what this group of nuns says doesn't sway my opinion anymore than what any other group against the bill says. I simply found it interesting that these nuns had come out in favor of the bill when it had seemed that most Catholic groups had been against it. I totally disagree about the language of the bill being interpreted to say abortion is funded by tax dollars. If someone wishes to purchase abortion coverage with their own money they can do so. As it is, there will likely be fewer companies that participate in the exchange offering abortion coverage. In any event, neither YOU nor YOUR tax dollars will be funding abortion. Annie
