What do you think of Mayawati as a politician? When she built statues after statues using State's money do you she was working for the development of the people? Do you think it's right to make money garland like the way she was offered?

She is filthy rich too. If she was really concerned for the poor Dalits why is amassing huge wealth? I think that's a valid question to ask. I think one might ask why can't she gift the money towards the welfare of the poor. I have not seen leaders making one's own statue. I wonder if she's suffering from inferiority complex and so she wants to boost up her image by making giant statute using State's money.

You can count hundreds of demerits in her, she is a inferior, foolish, selfish, arrogant and duffer lady who only can think about her and her benefit, she doesn't have any worry about lower class citizens, poor or dalit peoples, so she make this kinds of efforts to prove herself as a popular and angel leader for dalit poor peoples.

Hello, friend i'm belongs to up..and i think she is not a politician...She doing the work as saddam has done in iraq by creating her monuments...by spending huge money on there....and not concern about the people living in her state.... I think she has no fault....the public who gave votes in election..are accountable for this...I don't know why the public appreciate her...coming in huge crowd to support her in a rally..friend i feel embrass when i anybody ask which state your belongs ....they makes fun of it... This type of politician are the big hindrance to the growth of our nation..or state...

Yes, Saddam Hussein in one guy built his own statue. I hope that UP will have a better leader next time. I am not sure who is the best suitable person but Mayawati is not the best. She's probably the worst among current Indian politician.

Hi friend, In India all politicians are same and doing rubbish always. There is some exceptions with some personalities but most of them are same. Their only aim is power, position and money. For power they can do anything. They, least bothered about the welfare of the people. Mayawati is only one among them.

Unfortunately it appears that Mayawati is not working for the welfare of those who elected her as CM of UP. It seems she is indulging in something so vain; and very much inward looking. She seems to be infected with narcissistic flu. It's time she change or the voter change their candidate. Thanks for commenting.

I am not a supporter of Mayawati and even of any politicians. but i have my own view. Yes by law she has done very wrong and she must not do these activities which just put people feelings hurt. but if you talk about the statue and parks then i will say we can see this in different perspective. i think this is a better way than Mr Madhukoda in Jharkhand who drunk Rs 4000 cr just with no investment. By construction statue there are number of statues and sculpture artists get benefited and by parks a big number of labours and other dependent industries and workers. so finally the money goes in the people and then all other industries. and these kind of huge constructions also contribute in tourism. There is a story of Taj Mahal also that Shahjahan has spent the huge money to make this, no body wanted that during the time. but today it is the icon of our country. So in my view if any government is spending money in any kind of development we should not oppose, yes we can demand for more and other development too. I live in Lucknow and the beauty of the place is very noticeable even we cant believe in our eyes as we are in India.

Taj Mahal was built for his beloved. Except for megalomaniac who builds one's own statue? Of course labourers get job in building statue, but labourers can get job even when roads or schools or hospitals are built too.For labourers what is immediately received is more beneficial. So they will build even statues because that gives them job. But a hospital is built then they get a job plus a hospital. I think Mayawata could have invested that way. Adding more colleges or hospitals or better roads can also benefit Lucknow. Compared to Kerala or Mizoram UP is far far behind even in term of literacy rate so Mayawati could have invested money in building schools as well. Since money is limited we have to use wisely. Of course if money is unlimited then we can build statues but that is not the case. I think we should prioritise our investing in that which will generate employment as well generate future benefit. Anyway, thanks for writing.

In India we face a common phenomenon which is very little accountability of the ministers..when the people of the subcontinent is finding it hard to earn two square meals a day then we see a politician who claims to be the leader of the masses engage in spending money..and showing to the world that India is indeed shining..what a shame.Though Mayawati may be a popular figure with the Dalits yet I don't think that what she did is right..you can show your respect not by using money garlands but by paying tribute to your leader..However, the much famed garland goes to show that you enjoy absolute power which the leader may have tried to show..To tell you the truth I cannot find a reasonable cause why the money garland was given to her..however, whatever the reason may be I don't think it is right.

Thanks for responding. I think she was trying to show off that she has lots of money. Poor people in India respect those who are rich and show off a lot. I think she was trying to capture the audience and respect of the poor and weak. India would go back 50 years if someone like her becomes Prime Minister. And she is nurturing Prime Ministerial ambition.

In a country like India where politicians rise to power not just because people cast their votes but they vote their caste, a politician like Mayawati is surely a threat to the leadership occupying the highest office now ruling the country. "In India, there are no independent or individual political choices, there are only collective choices," says Bose, the Mayawati biographer.Caste matters in politics because it can translate directly into opportunities—places at universities, jobs in the public sector or government contracts.Since becoming chief minister again in 2007, Mayawati has launched a host of large public-works projects. She has built new highways, power stations and water-purification plants that her advisers say are designed to attract big business. All this overshadows the millons being spent in building hundreds of monuments at present under construction in U.P., which could end up costing $250 million, including $142 million for the Lucknow project alone.

Thanks for the post. I wish she would spend money for other development projects instead of building her statues. However, caste politics is a reality in India. I am not sure whether it's a boon or a bane. The "lower caste" keeps arguing that the "higher caste" exploit them and they need someone from their rank to take on the other. I am not how much is true when one accuses the other of exploitation. The twist there, I think, is complex.
