Do you think that captaincy affects batting..? Because recently former KKR captain Brendon McCullum said that his captaincy affected his batting in the second edition of IPL in South Africa. “I tried to be too responsible with my batting. My game is based around being aggressive and playing with no fear”—he said. "I think the messages that I was preaching I actually wasn't following myself in terms of that aggressive style of cricket. In hindsight,I think I let the captaincy affect my batting, but fortunately, towards the end of the competition I produced some performances that helped the team win as well"—he added. KKR will miss McCullum for sure I think.. But he said that captaincy changed his normal batting and made too responsible...But I don't think that captaincy will affect batting.Once Sehwag also said that he can't perform well in IPL due to captaincy.I really don't get this..But if you take Dhoni , he is the man who helped many matches to make India win..or Ricky ponting..is also doing good...What do you think whether captaincy affects batting...?

It depends on person to person. There are a lot of people who think when they become a captain, they have to change their styles to show that they are more responsible. These are the people who feel that captaincy is a burden as they change their natural style. This also leads to a drop in performance. If they play their natural game they give themselves a better chance of winning and also enjoy their captaincy. A classic case is Gayle, who continues to play his attacking game even when he is a captain. Cheers! Ram

Yes, you need to be cool while continuing to think aggressively. Cheers! Ram

This has affected many greats as well. Sachin Tendulkar was a classic example. i think well brilliantly gifted individuals take up captaincy, they expect too much from lesser mortals or from themselves. This added self inflicted expectation, makes them a less effective captain or performer. even a cool shewag declined Delhi daredevil's captaincy & you can see a sudden improvement in his 20-20 form

Captaincy can affect your batting performance in both ways, Sometimes a player really gets a boost from being given the captaincy and they become a much more consistent batsman. Of course other times it can affect your batting adversely because you may be thinking too much about team score or strategy that you take your focus off the batting aspect and make poor decisions.

It's true that there is no logical reason why captaincy should affect batting however at the same time it shows the mental toughness of a particular individuals..we have seen several cricketers in the world suffered when captaincy as entrusted upon them..the one that comes to mind is the great Sachin Tendulkar himself that's why he gave up captaincy and sourav Ganguly was appointed in his place..may be reason behind this logic is that as a captain one has to look beyond his own performance he has to keep in mind his team before himself and that affects the particular cricketer,he no longer can enjoy the game as he is always in the thick of things..for Macculam it was a bit tougher because he displaced somebody who had a huge fan base and Brendon was expected to produce favourable result for his team, beside there were lots of controversies all around and so that affected Brendon to a great extent,he always played with a cloggered mind..I think in the present day Ponting,Dhoni and the like they are not affected as they adopt something which is known as fearless cricket..they are not worried about the consequences they believe that if they and their team can give 100% in the field then that's enough to win a match and their confidence spreads to their players too. However,it must be accepted that a majority of cricketers do lose their form when they start captaining their side though there are exceptions like those you mentioned.

Ya, first thanks for your response.I agree with you completely. Dhoni is really great and he is giving his best all the time and also handles the situation very clever. He is the best captain for India so far.But Ganguly also is good , I can't leave him..anyway thanks again...

It would to some people, and not to others. It depends largely on the personality and temperament of the individual. Aggressive personalities like Dhoni, Ponting, Ganguly are people who enjoy the authority and challenges of captaincy, and their batting is not likely to suffer. On the other hand, more quiet personalities, e.g. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, certainly found that captaincy affected their batting performance.

A good leader is usefull even if he is an ordinary player n yet sometimes the most extraordinary players turn out to be bad leaders Its all about personality some r born leaders some r born stars! n u need both in a team to make it work

Though I do not like to comment on cricket , I like to comment on captaincy. In any organization, the behavior of the captain , will change the organization. The captain should be more accommodate, he should be obedient, and he should be able lead their members. Many leaders fails in that. As a Game, in India cricket is given much more important because of the money power. If they are also given salary /wage just like any other game or organization, and there will be much importance attached to the game. I think captaincy does not affect batting coz a player fonds to play does not affect anything
