Super Violent Video games and REAL life crimes, Connected or not ?

I just did a survey for an upcoming video game and it occured to me to wonder. Since video games have gotten so much more sophisticated and real looking, what is the connection to real world violence? Are they desensitizing us more than we think? I don't usually go to slasher movies but I did go to one of the 3-D versions just to see the 3-D effects which were way cool and well done. But I was surprised to find that after the 4th or 5th graphically brutal slaying, it didn't make me jump as much. By the end of the movie, it didn't really effect me much at all. Now of course, I knew it was just a movie but what is the long term impact on those who watch these types of movies and play the video games regularly? One has only to turn on the nightly news to hear of another horrifically brutal crime. I think there is a strong connection since the rate of the violence in both is increasing all the time. What do you think? Should anything be done besides the parental ratings?

I was thinking more of the war based video's. Where you are attacking and killing masses of other people. Attacking talking chickens likely wouldn't have much of an impact so I agree there. Take care!

Yes, studies have shown that repeated exposure to graphic violence, either in real life, in the movies or video games, desensitizes children to the horror of it. It also interferes with their ability to feel empathy for others. As far as what should be done, communities as well as parents should work with kids so that they have a better understanding of the real world outside of the entertainment world.

Well said! I know that the main reason the parental warnings were put in place is that so parents could know the kind of game their kid wanted but not sure it's done much good. I think my greater concern is with the video games since you are the one doing the violence whilst movies it's more passive. Yes, I agree that parents need to have better limits that they place on their children. Sadly, it seems that isn't happening for the most part. Thanks for sharing!!

Hi Tallygirl09, I do agree that really violent games but more so movies do desensitize a person to graphic violence. I have watched all kinds of horror movies since I was a kid and nothing with regards movies or games really shock me. There has been a recent upsurge with gore horror in recent years, which I am not really a fan of, not because it shocks me, rather because it doesn't. I don't think there is a strong connection between violent games and movies attributing to real life crimes, although I am sure there are some exceptions. The parental ratings are there for a reason, so parents do have a responsibility to a degree to what their children are subjected to. They have banned countless games and movies over the years in various countries but crime rates still exist.

I think there is. It's basically role playing. One way or another it gets into your subconscious. Games nowadays are so true to life as far as graphics are concerned. The more exposed kids are to violent games, they no longer see it as such if ever they encounter it in real life.

There are a lot of violent crimes and there are a lot of video game players and movie watchers, so of course there are going to be a lot of criminals who happen to play video games. The funny thing to me is that most crime is done by the poor, who do it out of desperation or out of nothing to lose or whatever, so I doubt that they own video games, which are very expensive. I don't think the problem is with not having enough things like parental ratings, but rather that we don't have enough good parents any more. Divorce rates are crazy high...which means less parents around...and therefore less parenting. When children aren't disciplined correctly, they get out of control and bad things happen when they're older.

It's fun to play video games without realizing sometimes that it is happening in the real world. Others learn from it giving and showing ideas how to do murder. Parents should take precautions with their kids playing brutal killings video games. As you know, kids have good memory.

Yes I think something should be done to it since there are many movies around that has no real value behind the story and just plain violence only. They highlight the violence in the movie rather than the story itself. I am disturbed by its increase over the past decade or so. I think people are patronizing them as well that is why there is an increase of it over time.

I'm sure everyone has wondered this at one time or another, but the facts don't seem to back a link between games and crime up at all...violent crime rates have clearly fallen since violent video games have gotten popular. Some speculate that violent games may actually offer a release for violent emotions. I do think it can be bad for kids to play too many of these type of games because they can get really worked up and want to act out what they've seen in play, but it's pretty much just fun for teens and adults. I don't necessarily subscribe to the outlet theory entirely because I think a lot of murderers are mentally disturbed and simply can't empathize with their fellow humans...this would be true regardless of the existence of violent media. At any rate, it makes me feel very hopeful because the number of murders is dropping. Maybe we're becoming more civilized or more mentally healthy for some unknown reason. Recessions are usually terrible for crime so this current one has been a surprising exception!

There has been a lot of discussions on here about this subject throughout the two or three years I've been on this site. As for the connection? To be honest I am not quite sure. I think that games and movies do show a lot of brutal cruel things in this world and that those who are unstable may use said movies as inspiration to do horrific things, but who is to say that any person would not do said things anyway without the help of the media? I think that parental controls should be enforced for games, and movies, but I know that people do not always advise the warnings set forth for both video games and movies.

Funny you should mention, I just played a game where you pull apart human heads from their bodies with the spine still hanging around, it's called Alien vs Predator and the graphics are high-end and very realistic. But look at me I'm still the same, I'm not going to kill some humans because I played this silly game, I think those affected either play to much and lose the sense of reality or they already have problems, or society is too harsh to them so these games inspire them for ways to take revenge, for example I just watched a documentary about this issue, they presented a student who studied very hard all his life, but couldn't keep up with the high demand in his school, and so he isolated himself in his room, later on he went to the school, killed a student chopped of his head and stick it in the school's gate, so yes indeed, in my opinion these games inspire people for ways to commit crimes, but unless they have a real problem, they won't go killing people randomly.

Violent video games and movies are totally connected to real life crimes or vandalism. I have seen it first hand. You know games like mortal combat or shows like wrestling, yea i have seen 2 students in my school performing these move on each other because of a small argument. How immature. Anyways, people should realize that all these violence are just for entertainment and not to be learn and adapt into the real world. Parents should teach their child about what is right and wrong and what is real and fake.

I think there is connection between the two things. As the psychology research, when kids watch violent movie or play such games, they will show some attitude or behavior of violence. Though adults have more capability of self-control, if one likes such things on TV or games, he may tend to crule situations in reality.
