I really don't drink water much. Maybe a glass or two every other day but I do drink a lot of Coke Zero and I was just wondering, does it HAVE to be water you drink or can it be something else? Obviously something a little healthier than coke, could it be something like fruit juice?

i've only heard it to be 2 litres of water per day. but even then it's hard to drink that much, and i mainly drink water. but i did read in a fitness mag that it can depend on your weight on how much you should drink. i think the math for it was your weight x 0.3 = amount of water you should drink. so it you weigh 100kg you should drink 3 litres of water. or there abouts

I actually meant to say 8 glasses a day which is 3 litres lol. It is really difficult to drink 8 glasses of water in a day though but at the moment I've been trying to drink at least 3 in a day.

Water is obviously needed in a greater amount but you surely can drink some fruit juice or health drinks. See your body needs liquid, to pass out wastes, in one or the other forms. But the water is recommended because it has no side effects and a lot of other health benefits. I think you should seriously stop drinking cold drinks because it will damage your body completely. So the moral of the story is that you can look towards taking fruit drinks but you should drink a lot of water.

My doctor once told me that it doesn't HAVE to be water. All liquid counts, except for milk, which in dieting is considered solid. So fruit juice is definitely possible, as well as tea, coffee, soup, Coke, and of course, plain water. Anyway, if you don't sweat much, you shouldn't drink more than 3 litres a day, because you would be forcing your kidney into working way too hard. I hope my response was useful! Have a nice day!

As a gout sufferer, I'm very aware of the need to drink water, and I've researched it extensively. I agree with your doctor - up to a point. Water contained in other drinks still counts towards your 3 liters per day. However, you need to take account of the nutrients those drinks contain. Fruit juices are good for vitamins, but you have to be careful about calories and sugar content. Tea, coffee, Coke and other drinks often get slated because of the caffeine content, but there is not enough caffeine in them to cause dehydration. Research summary from "Caffeine ingestion and fluid balance" at http://www.goutpal.com/gout-treatment/gout-cures/home-remedies-for-gout/ (near the end of the page).

Coke is probably one of the worst things that you can put into your body. It will dehydrate your body. Unless you drink 2 to 3 litres of water each day, you will most likely be dehydrated and your body will not be functioning to it's full potential. YES, it has to be WATER! But you do not need to drink 8 litres a day. You do not need to be drinking the water straight though. I drink probably one and a half litres per day of straight water minimum, this is more in Summer. I love the taste of it and cannot understand how people do not like it. Perhaps you should filter your water if you are not already doing it. I also make smoothies for breakfast which include a lot of water and water rich foods such as green leaves and fruits. If you are eating lots of water rich foods, then you do not need to drink as much. In fact in this case, you can drink too much and end up flushing out a lot of the nutrients from the greens and fruits.

I prefer sweet things and as water isn't really sweet I don't really like it. Tap water also sometimes has a funny taste and I find it hard to swallow unless I've eaten something just before I drink it. Thanks for replying, I really understand the need for water a little more clearly so thank you :)

Tap water here has a funny taste too, so we filter it or drink spring water. It tastes way better! Most people prefer sweet things and that is why so many people are sick or overweight these days unfortunately. We must limit ourselves with sweet stuff or use natural sweeteners. I do not eat or drink any artificial or highly processed sweeteners and I get lots of sweetness in my foods. All natural!

hell0!well, i think that 8 liters of water is really too much! but as I know it doesn't have to be water, we just need some liquids in order to have a strong organism, because our organism needs at least 1.2 liters of water every day!

I believe you're thinking of 8 cups a day, not litres, as others have mentioned. I've spoken with my doctor about this issue, and from the way I understand it, juices and even food does contain water. Soda, coffee, and anything that contains caffeine is actually dehydrating, so you don't get any benefit from the water in it. A good rule of thumb - and I know this is a little icky - is to look when you pee and see what color it is. If it's clear or very pale, you are getting enough fluids. If it is yellow, you are dehydrated and need to drink more. If you don't like water, try drinking lemonade or buying packets of flavored, sweetened powder like Crystal Light brand to add to your water. You can also dilute fruit juice with water to make it healthier and more hydrating.

I have often thought about this, I just can't seem to drink plain water but I do drink a fair bit of tea, I hear different opinions on all this, I find it very confusing....

Me too! I like anything BUT water. I think it would be OK to drink 8 glasses of something other than water as long as it's healthy.

I honestly do not believe that it has to be straight water. I personally do not like the taste of water. I have a very hard time drinking any water at all. However, I do drink a lot of tea, fruit juice, and coffee. I have never had issues with dehydration other than when I have been ill. I am not sure that there are very many people that actually get the 8 glasses of water a day as straight water. Also, there is a lot of water in foods and different things that we consume. I think that as long as you are eating a balanced diet and drinking plenty of fluids that have water in them, you should be fine.

The amount of water you drink daily depends on a lot of factors- weight, gender, how active you are, et c. Sodas tend to be diaretics, which mean they sort of dehydrate you. I'm not sure if it has to be water. I'll drink tea or mix a flavor packet of powder in my water bottle for a drink that's a little more interesting.

it really has to be water. i did some searching on the net about this since my 4 year old hates the taste of water and instead aims for the 8 glasses of juice a day . i came across a tip saying to add more water than the recommended amount for a glass of juice and i find that my son finishing his glass completely than if i put in the recommended amount of water. seems he's getting tired of that sweet juice taste anyway but just cannot bring himself to drink water. i suggest you try it.

I think its only water or flavored water is what they are talking about. I drink very little water myself but I do drink only homemade sun tea or green tea. That is what I drink 95 percent of the time. Since tea is made up of water I think I'm ok. When it come to fruit juice I don't think so but I might be wrong. I think I heard that 8 glasses is not reasonable that its just to much and that 4 glasses is good enough. I believe I heard this somewhere and it might have been from Doctor OZ.

That's good. 4 glasses sounds a lot better than 8 but it's still going to be a challenge! :(

For me, it much better to drink water. We're sure that it's healthy, there's no artificial flavors added that may cause internal disease. Water is affordable, it's a cleaner- it eliminates toxins inside our body. It helps us to have a normal metabolism and it serves as a solvent for many bodily solutes.

I also don't drink water so much. But i drink something else like fruit juice or zero coke. i don't know about coke. But i know if you drink fruit juice then it's ok. You need nutrition and mineral. so if you drink juice then ok. Moreover in juice you will some extra benefit as it's have Vitamin, protein and some other nutation. But i suggest you fresh juice not chemical & flavor mixed juice. So it does not have to be water.

That's great! I don't mind fresh fruit juice as much so hopefully it'll be a little easier to drink 8 glasses a day.

I think when they say eight liters of water they mean eight liters of liquids and can include juice and even coca cola (even though that wouldn't be a healthy source). My science teacher used to say that it's a marketing scam by the water company to set a standard to drink eight cups a day but I try to drink as much fluids as I can.

I am sure that fruit juice would do as good (or even better) as water. It contains a lot of vitamins and useful elements, that help to strengthen our health. But I think that people should also drink a certain amount of pure water daily too.

Eight LITRES a day? Good grief, give your kidneys a chance! It should be eight glasses a day - roughly TWO litres. You can mix fruit juice with water for something that has a pleasant taste. Don't forget pure juices are very high in sugar so it is best to dilute them anyway. Lay off the coke, it ain't good for you.

you dont need to drink 8 litres of water!a day....drinking so much water would cause reduction in sodium potassium and many other required salts and nutrients in the body(all the vitamins which are water soluble)....it can prove really harmful to drink so much water...

yeah its better you drink some liquid but a healthy one. our body is built from 80 percent liquid and rest is solid stuff. to drink something is better because we are actually taking something which our body needs and body needs some natural thing not unnatural.
