Sitting close to the TV doesnt cause permanent damage to our eyes.Instead it causes eye strain and fatigue which means our eyes get tired which translates to blurry vision.I prefer a distance of 10'-12' while watching on a 42" HDTV.I hope this gives you an idea.

It's very important to take care of your eyes. 1. Adequate lightning - It's a bad habit to switch of room lights when watching television. 2. Keep a safe distance from the television set. The CAO recommends that a person watch TV from a distance of 5x the width of the picture (note that's the actual width of the screen—not the diagonal screen measure that's typically used to compare screen size), but anything more than 3x the width should be sufficient. http://www.unplggd.com/unplggd/safety-security/keeping-your-eyes-healthy-during-a-tv-marathon-086117 3. Rest your eyes as much as possible. Every hour make sure that at least you take a five minutes break. Do something else don;t stay on computer or television.

If the screen is an LCD screen, you can get as close as you like. These days CRT screens are properly shielded and even about half the 'normal' viewing distance should be quite safe. Damage to the eyes from computer (and TV) screens is actually much more to do with keeping the eyes focussed at a fixed distance for long periods of time. Every 10 minutes or so you should take your eyes off the screen and look out of the window or across the room. The light in the room should also be at about the same level as the light from the screen and there should not, of course, be any sources which reflect off the screen. What is the 'normal' distance? This is usually defined as being at least the same distance from the eyes to the screen as the diagonal of the screen. Many people will watch TV at a much greater distance, of course, and most people will comfortably view a 17" screen (screen sizes are always measured by their diagonals) at about 24" (60 cm). It depends on the nature of your eyesight disability. If it can be corrected with lenses, you should get your optician to prescribe glasses for a viewing distance of somewhere between 18" and 30", depending on the size and placement of your screen. You should also be aware that you can change the size of text and other things in your browser (in Firefox, it is View|Zoom). Windows also provides tools for those with poor eyesight. Look in Control Panel under Ease of Access (in Vista).
