I have been in this state for over 6 months now. I stay in the nursing home with my son through the day but have evenings somewhat free. I don't know anyone here. My family lives relatively close but just a little too far to go frequently. Any ideas on how to get out and meet people? I am a very friendly person but just have never been in this position before....

Join a local church (if that is your thing), there are many great people there are many friendships can be made.
Join a local sports team, bowling, softball, tennis all of those things are places you could meet people and enjoy interacting with them.
Join a support group. You are obviously a mother with a child with special needs. There are all kinds of support groups for people in your situation. Go to the local social services office and see what is available.
Volunteer. I have met some of my best friends by volunteering for different charities. Find something you are love and want to get involved with, groups are always looking for another person willing to lend a hand.

Great ideas. Most churches don't have evening services any more. But I might look into a sport. I run and might meet some people that way.and a charity or volunteering is a great idea too.. I'll look into it! thanx

Nursing homes have employees and they are the people you are primarily in contact with. Being on friendly terms with them is bound to result into you finding something in common with them.
Also, if you have a hobby or planning to take up one, you can find people who have the same interests as you. An activity friend goes a long way.

I do talk to some of the employees here... but haven't done anything outside with them. I am a runner, maybe I'll find someone at a running club -- but that costs money.
