I always explain to my children as to the benefits of reading and get them books for their birthdays and also in exhibitions, when we visit them. I enrolled them in a library and they get books from there apart from getting books from their own school and college libraries. Since me and my husband have reading habits, children usually take to the habit of reading good books. Do you like to read books and do you encourage your children to take up reading habit? How do you encourage them?

I do have a reading habit. My son is a voracious reader. My husband also reads a lot and he bought all the books that my son should read.He himself has an extensive collection of books .Right from when he was 2 years old he was exposed to books and this has been upgraded by stages. His vocabulary and presentation skills are excellent.

Right from when he was achild , I used to sit with my son , reading out comics and introducing new words to him; my husband also used to read stories to him.So he took to reading very naturally.

I am very very happy you and your husband took so much interest in inculcating reading habit in your son. It is an enjoyable and useful habit which anyone should have.

Yes, I do read books. Most of the time, when I read, my kids will follow. I would read aloud on purpose and they do the same too. I think in order to encourage kids to read, it's best the parents first set an example for the kids to emulate. Besides reading, there are many things parents can do to influence the kids.

Very true friend. Parents are the first examples for children. They learn a lot and try to follow their parents in their childhood. If we have good habits, then the children too will take them up.

Hi Buchi, I think if parents have the habit of reading then kids also will get that habit automatically. Unfortunately I got busy and can’t find enough time to read now. I am busy with work, kids and family. But I am trying to encourage my kids to read books and I have collected so many books for them already. Sometimes I sit with them and read books for them. In my son’s school curriculum story reading is a must. They are conducting book exhibition in the school twice in a year. I purchased books from there too even though it is costly than outside.

You are such a sweet parent friend. How nicely you are encouraging your children by getting them books, though it is a bit costly, by going to school for their functions and national events like Independence Day etc. I am sure your children will be intelligent and smart and be good citizens. God bless them.

reading of magazine is my habit now its also informative and any form of reading materials should be encourages to all children but there are reading materials not suit for them to read so parents should monitor their children activities since reading is the beast form of learning.

Very true. Parents should monitor as to what sort of books are being read by the children and encourage children to read good and useful books.

Yes, I love to read but not as voraciously now but I still read though. We have a 7-year-old kid in the house and we got her started reading comics like Archie, Sabrina comics. We hope to get her into more serious stuff later on, but no pressure.

Yes. Let them start with light reading so that they themselves will get used to read serious stuff later.

I would definitely encourage reading to my kids. I've read a lot of books and it was very helpful for me to improve my skills in English. It was a very good way for me to learn something. Its was also a good way for me to learn new vocabularies. So I was thinking that if it is effective for me then it is going to be effective for my kids too. As an online english teacher, I think its a very effective way to learn.

Very true. Children will be inspired to read, when they see parents reading books.
