It seems like hibernate is better than shutdown. Is there any disadvantage to using hibernate over shutdown?

Well I use only hibernate and sometimes sleep. I have not shut down my pc from many months. In my opinion there is nothing harmful in hibernating as the ram contents get stored as it is and when you again start pc that ram content get loaded. While if you shut down your PC then all ram contents are flushed so while starting up all the start up programs need to be loaded first so it takes time If you start your pc after a shut down Sleep takes some amount of energy but it is faster than hibernate. My laptops battery backup is low that's why I don't prefer sleep

well.. it depends upon time you want to sleep and also your ram.. If you are planning to go away for upto an hour then better to hibernate and also if you are running less than 3 GB RAM it's better to hibernate if you are running your system with 3 GB or more hibernate will take more time compare to shutdown and also it will occupy more hard disk space too. if you want to compare you can find it hibernate.sys in your C:\ Drive only.

It depends upon user's wish and time and type of work the user is doing. But better option is shutdown it is safer side than hibernate. Also when you logon next time all your cached memory, files will be cleared and will have a fresh start with more speed than hibernating

hell0! as i know the only advantage of the hibernation is that you can faster continue you work without having to wait for the whole OS to load once again. but this is all! the hibernation actually "eats" from the CPU speed and from the virtual memory of the PC/laptop which means that it works slower. so that's why if you don't use the hibernate option, it is better to switch it off

i think if u r shutting ur pc down.... it takes rest... and everything is shut down... i recommend if u want to turn it off for a short period of time then u should hibernate... but if u will not gonna use it for more than 6 hours... then i recommend shut it down... there is a probability of corruption of any software... if u do hibernate for a long period of time...

Hibernate is a good choice because it allows you to keep your program opening and save the power and i don't think that it have any disadvantages.
