Does it bother you that Congress exempts itself from the laws it makes?

From http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,967427,00.html By one count, only 61 of the 2,500 senior policy staff members working for the Senate are black. There are, however, no exact records -- because Congress has exempted itself from equal-opportunity and affirmative-action laws. -- House Speaker Jim Wright's office catches fire, but there are no sprinklers. The laws requiring them do not apply to the Capitol or other federal buildings. -- A controversy erupts over dangerous working conditions in the Capitol's mail-folding room, where newsletters are processed. Congress does not fall under the occupational safety and health (OSHA) regulations that bedevil other employers. -- Legislators are about to decide whether to raise the federal minimum-wage level for the first time in seven years. At the moment, however, the minimum- wage laws do not protect the 15,000 people who work for Congress. -- Congressional Aide Tom Pappas leaps to his death after it is revealed that for years he engaged in unorthodox employment practices, including advertising for single young men (photographs requested) and making unusual demands on their social lives. Congress has exempted itself from equal-employment laws that might prevent such practices in private industry. -- Michael Deaver and Lyn Nofziger face jail terms because their lobbying ran afoul of the Ethics in Government Law. Congressmen and their staffers who become lobbyists and do the same things have no fear: the law does not apply to them. In my opinion, ALL laws made by Congress, should apply to congress.

First of all you need to understand that these people were elected to the office and are ENTITLED to the privileges of the office. They are the ruling class and can not be bothered by the little rules. They are the elite and know what is best for you and what is best for them. Their time is valuable and they can not be bothered worrying about the rules. They make them so they can break them. To all of you out there who feel you know better SIT DOWN, SHUT UP AND CONGRESS WILL TELL YOU WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU, SINCE YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE THE PROBLEM AND NOT THE RULING CLASS (CONGRESS).

They want us to follow the laws they make but take a good look at all the congress people who have cashed bad checks, been drunk while driving {Patrick Kenndey} and gave us a health care bill that's not worth the paper it's written on...Yet they get to keep their own........If that bill is so good why don't they drop their insurance policy and take the one they are trying to poke down our throat.....That you won't be able to use until 2014.....but your paying taxes on it now.... Oh I forgot King Obama and his band of thugs want to make us take this and be happy...And what about all of those congress people who don't pay their taxes oh forgot they don't know how to us Turbo Tax......Duha they are to stupid to be in Congress.......Says a lot for the people who put them there..

I agree but we do get what we deserve because we voted these people into office. If they choose not to listyen to the voters, we MUST vote them out!

I don't agree - we do not get the government we deserve. There are some of us who definitely did NOT vote for any of the clowns in office, and we were against ALL of their policies before they even tried to shove them down our throats, and we warned other people about it to no avail. No, we certainly do not deserve to have this crap happen to us!

Government is just a group of people, there is nothing more special about them than any other group. Yet they think so, and because they think so they do not fell like they should play by the same rule as every other group has to. If their rules are such a good idea let those rules apply to them also. What would be the matter, the rules are such a good thing, are they not?

Good question but they vote against it! We should hold their feet to the fire on this one.

Yep, this is stupid. Any and ALL laws passed and upheld ought to apply to everybody, including all of Congress, any and ALL government employees of any type, up to and including the president. I believe if this is not so, then I do not have to worry about any of it applying to ME either, as I will exempt myself thru a loophole just because THEY do. BTW, I agree with equal opportunity, meaning that everybody is equal, the only thing that should be used to determine the best candidate for a job is knowledge, skill, experience, and fit for the job, which does not have anything to do with gender, marital status, education and degrees, location, lifestyle, or age. I do not believe in affirmative action.

I agree and equality is equality for all. Not extra rights for certain people.

All laws should apply to everyone. No exception. It should tell us all something about the caliber of people we are electing to these offices they ARE exempting themselves...they think they are better than all us "little" people..and that htey are above the law.

Just the other day, my sister sent me an e-mail with a proposed amendment to the constitution. The amendment was short and sweet and simply said that Congress would no longer be exempt from the laws that it creates. I didn't keep the e-mail. I should have and then I'd be able to post it here. But I'd certainly be in support of the amendment!

I would too. It has gone to vote before and both parties voted against it. I will work at digging specifics!

Sounds good. I'll see if I can find anything too. I'd be in support of an amendment for term limits as well.
