Hi Urban,
Good question. The best friend is definitely the one that will tell you the truth even though it hurts while at the same time being considerate of our feelings. It's hard when you have to tell someone you care about something that you know is going to hurt them. When I'm in a situation like that, it actually hurts me also. I love my friends and I don't like hurting them at all. That being said, it is important to choose your words carefully.

Dearest Urban,
My best friends, both my husband and my best female friend, protect my feelings, but tell it like it is when the telling is needed. THOSE are the best of all friends!

I want to be told the truth always. I hate it when someone says I didn't tell you because whatever the reason. It is disrespectful, and treats you like a child.

I prefer a friend who tells the truth though it hurts. A friend should serve as a mirror. I am not perfect. I may have done or said things that are not appropriate. So, I would appreciate a friend who has the courage to tell my mistakes and aims to make me a better person. Rather than a friend who criticize at my back.

I would choose the friends that tell the truth, no matter what. I have recently been upset with my 2 best friends. They lie to me about their experiences with boys. We're all usually open with each other about if we like someone and what happens sexually. I just found out that my best friend that I've known for 15 years lied to me about who she lost her virginity to. It really upset me, since I have never lied to my friends about these experiences.

A person who is close and dear and is there when you need them. This is a best friend forever :)

I would much rather have a friend that would tell me the truth. Sometimes we do not want to hear what the truth really is but a true friend will tell us when our view are shadowed and we need a reality check. But so often it is hard to find this kind of person becuase they are concerned about hurting others even when they know it is best.
