I have been reading a lot of buzz words used in the papers lately with regards to expanding your horizon. Be it in business, social or even your regular job, the key word is to network.
Sounds very easy. Just meet up with like people and then know more about the latest in advancement in whatever field you are in.
This set me back thinking, I have been working for almost a decade now. And my circle of people that I worked with are always, almost the same group. They talk the same projects, they discuss about similar advancement in technology... etc etc.
But is this necessarily called networking?
What exactly is networking? And if one were to want to start widening their network, how does one actually do it?

Widening of network, actually means casting your net out wide.. To reach as far out as possible, rather than being in the small pool of friends when there are some great whales, dolphins out there.. lol =D
Get to know more friends, or start to meet up with old school mates, catch up with them for updates.. That's where u will get more than the latest in advancement of everything going on.. hehe

mylot is a networking site. sites like facebook, myspace, and yuwie are also sites that are considering networking sites. you can network on and offline. you just need to get out there and find other people who share the same interest as you

Technology is great. It sounds to me like you want to expand your current "network". Social sites like facebook are fantastic for this sort of thing. There are pages for just about anything. Groups you can join as well. Networking= The process of using one contact to gain others.

Networking is a great and wonderful thing. It is building a network of people, to call friends. Think of it like a spider web, you are in the middle, and then you meet people, and they introduce you to other people, and you meet more people, and more people. You don't necessarily make friends with them all, but you put out lines here and there, stay in contact from time to time. And then this would be your network. Chances are if someone in your Network Learns of something of interest to you, they will share it with you.
So, chances are you already have a network, a network of school friends, and a network of work colleagues, and your family. One of the best ways in my opinion to expand your network, is to just start saying hi to more and more people each day, start up a light conversation. Talk to them. Talk to everyone(easier said then done, I know).
And then there is network marketing, where you use tools, such as the newspaper, radio, television, internet, and personal referrals to introduce people to the products or services that you offer, and can't really be obtained outside of the industry, or at the very least, are of a far higher quality and priced better inside the industry, as well as the opportunity to build a passive income from ongoing sales.
So those are the ways to build your network. Attending seminars and workshops is a great way to meet new people, and learn something new, and asking to continue the relationship with out coming off as too creepy. It may take more then one meeting on the bus, before that pretty girl would be comfortable to share her phone number so you can meet for beverages.
With appreciation.

Some success experts said, "It is not what you know that matters... It's who you know!" .. and that's the essence of networking. :)
