Smoking - Do you remember why you started smoking?

I have been wondering, how many of my friends really remember why they started smoking. Mine would be because my friends smoke and I just wanted to try. Yes, peer pressure. I was still in high school then, maybe I was 16. Lucky for me, after high school, I did not have many friends at home (I went to a boarding school btw) and not having any smoker friends kinda stopped my new bad habit. I couldn't be more thankful that I was an anti-social guy :P So what about you guys?

I don't smoke, but one of my brothers, smokes a lot. He started from his career after he joins his job, his first job. Steadily, he was addict to it but after he got married, you won't believe it he stopped. He stopped because his wife said, if he won't stop smoking before marriage, she won't marry him and for the sake of his love, he quits. So lucky his wife is that she got such a loving husband.

My boyfriend and my brother smoked Newports. When I got to missing my boyfriend, I stupidly decided to smoke a Newport because the smell reminded me of him. The boyfriend's gone and I still have the habit!

I started smoking when I was twelve years old. My best friend was 14 and asked if I wanted to try it. I did but didn't inhale, so she told me if I wasn't going to do it right I couldn't smoke. So inhale I did and boy was I sick for about a half hour. I tried it again the next day and .....well the rest is history. I am still smoking at 49...

a lot of people started smoking because of peer pressure. that is unfortunate i reckon. imagine how much money was spent over 30 years of smoking.

I am a non-smoker but I remember the time when I "practiced" smoker. That was at home with my brothers and sisters while my parents were watching us .. It was just smoking for the heck of it . We just wanted to know how it feels to smoke as my father was a chain smoker. . . We all didn't like smoking . .

i started smoking to just prove myself as a grown up boy. i just wanted to prove my self a bit dangerous and advance boy. but luckily i dont smoke now. during the time i used to smoke not due to addiction but due to show off only. and now even i dont show off.

i wonder if kids today know how uncool it actually is, in the eyes of adults who have been there. at least i dont think it's cool. more like unfortunate and 'what a mess that kid is'

Good thing i dont do smoking at all, there was this time that i almost tried it, like i saw a friend smoke then i wanted to try it as well. Out of curiosity i did but good thing by nature i dont like it so i stopped. Smoking can be an addiction whether others will confirm or not people are having a hard time just to stop smoking, it might be their way of releasing stress or whatever it is that they feel, when they are tense, stressed or just about anything.I heard its pretty hard to stop smoking too, once your hooked then it continues over and over again.

it is unfortunate that a lot of us started smoking just out of curiosity. and then have a hard time quitting the habit. but it is achievable. it is!

I started when I was about nine years old. We all did, it was cool. I wish I never started and yes I still smoke.

wow 9 years old is very young to start smoking. hope you will be able to stop smoking. i think the environment you're in is plays a huge role in the success (or failure) of kicking the habit

i used to smoke for 1 month out of curiosity or just to be in with my friends, though i know some of them smoke to take off stress nor pressure from work and other problem nor things that other them. though i stop after a month coz i realize that its only an additional cost in my part instead of saving it. and since im pregnant which is im not really allowed to smoke so i stop.

i do agree, the worst thing about smoking is the cost. i can't imagine myself spending hundreds a month for those things. i'm not a rich guy and besides i have a wife to support anyway. thank god i don't smoke.. or else i'd have to work extra hard :P

I started smoking when I was about 18 years old. That was the time when I felt like a big boy and therefore would want to try some big boys' stuff. I started hanging out with friends who smoke and gradually picked up the smoking habit. Of course, I regretted and am still trying very hard to kick the habit.

I started smoking in college, just turned 18, and my boyfriend of 2 years from high school broke up with me. I started with Lucky Strike menthol (which in hindsight is yuck), then moved on to Marlboro Lights, until I settled for Winston reds. A lot of the people I usually hang out with at the time were also smokers, so yes just a few months after I first lit up I ended up being a chain smoker. I've stopped smoking two years ago, it was easy once I got out of our chimney of a boarding house. Whenever it gets really cold or when I'm really anxious though, or when I'm with my smoker friends again, I still light up, but only a stick or three.

the key word is 'may' :P. and it 'may not' lead to a serious problem. :P i think people who have never tried smoking couldn't really understand how hard it is to quit. but it achievable.. very challenging but when a smoker manages to quit, it is such a huge relief! i may not have experienced the 'relief' but a friend of mine has and he couldn't stop talking about how thankful he is to be able to stop smoking. and how it changed his life, especially financially

Hi dr9rim I started smoking from 14, I didn`t remember why I start smoking clearly. I think I started smoking because my friends, my best friend said would you want to try? I said yeah, then I started smoking. The inception was not special.

lol not special but i bet lots of us started smoking the exact same reason you have. and to think back, such a silly reason started such a huge addiction, is kinda sad i reckon.

i started smoking back when i was in highschool. It was just out of curiousity. it was funny cuz at first i was just keeping the smoke in my mouth for a few minutes then i'd blow it out. i wasn't taking it in. then a friend told me i have to inhale the smoke after i take sip. i really felt stupid. lol.
