Lack of calcium in your diet is the main reason of Gingivitis, gums tend to bleed especially while brushing, beware of using harsh/hard kind of tooth brush use tooth paste particularly for sensitive gum and teeth, avoid drinking cold water that will cause more sensitivity of the gum if its severe bleeding don't use toothbrush for a while instead use your finger and tooth paste massage the gum area to prevent inflamation of the gum massage gently and rinse out.Take some supplement for healthy gum and teeth, vitamin c is recommended for this kind of disease..Drink milk regularly for better calcium supply aside from taking supplements...Mouthwash is not recommended for gingivitis as they contain of Benzoic acid that can irritate gum while suffering from gingivitis minimize using mouthwash for the time being instead, use soft bristle tooth brush and a total care toothpaste..You can continue using mouth wash after gingivitis had been cured.
Hope it helps a little!

Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums which is caused by different risk factors. Smoking is included and even if your friend stopped smoking it does not mean that his problem will go away. If he has been smoking for long then that would no stop his gums from bleeding only if he will seek his dentist for proper care and prescription if there would be treatment needed on his case.
It's better if you suggest to your friend that he go see a dentist to have it treated and prevent complications in the future. It is dangerous if gingivitis is ignored.
