My roommates and I were having a discussion and the subject of the Bible came up. One of my roommates keeps her Bible open to the book of Psalms. She says that this is the way it is suppose to be. I have been a Christian all my life and have never heard of this. Has anyone heard of this and if so, what is the reason for it?

It seems strange to me. I do find that the Bible naturally opens in Psalms because Psalms is in the middle of the Bible. That, however, does not mean that Psalms are the most important or that one gets some magical power from them (that is superstition and the word of God speaks against superstition.) There are some Psalms like the 23rd that gives one comfort and there are some that are for the destruction of one's enemies. I think your friend believes that when she opens the middle of her Bible, and it opens on Psalms that that makes it the most important. I think all of the Bible are important.

I never believed it at first, so I tried it out and it worked.

I totally agree with you. When I called it Biblical superstition she got highly offended. But that is certainly the first thing that came to my mind.

I have never heard that neither. I have seen where the bible is open like in church, but never paid attention to where it was open too. Maybe you will get your answer here and why that is done. BTW, its nice seeing you, how have you been? I've been good. Hope you have a Blessed and very Happy Easter.

Thank you. I hope that you have a wonderful Easter also. I am still around. Most of the time I am playing the many games on Facebook. In my opinion, you can keep the Bible open to whatever you want, the important thing is that you read what it says.

I remember when my kids were born as well as myself, my mom who is from the West Indies, would put a Bible behind the head of the child. I asked her at the time why and she told me that it is done to ward off evil spirits from the child. Some even keep it open still to keep it away.very interesting question

I offended my roommate when I said that it sounded like Biblical superstition, but I guess things like that can not hurt. However, the Bible is of no use unless you read what it says.

Hmmm, never heard of that as a rule. I, personally like to read Psalms when I'm troubled with something. ...and as far as the rule is concerned, I've always seen people bookmarking their bibles at the last place they read them, and if they are left open, then it's just the last place they were reading at. There's always more to learn about everything, so it definitely deserves more research. Or, maybe she was just saying that's the way SHE believes it should be.

I know exactly what you mean about reading Psalms when you are troubled. Psalms is my favorite book of the Bible. What bothered me is that she said that this is the way that it should be. I place the marker where I am reading and close my Bible. I also keep a Bible cover on it. I believe that if the Bible is protected in this way, it will last longer.
