Why I don't go to the movies.

I don't go often to see a movie in the theater today. I prefer to use the cheap pay per view option offered by my cable provider. I have my reasons. When I was young, in the 70's, I was going to the movies twice a week wherever I was. I was looking for the cheaper theaters and I had to run out sometimes. I ran out of a theater in Barcelona where the smokers' fog was so heavy that I was suffocating. I ran out faster in Paris when a dirty old man near me put a hand on my right thigh ; outside I realized that ladies in that street were not true ladies. I believe in this story, that a friend told me. It happened to one of his friends, in one of those bad movies theaters. They had a drink and were late. They sat in the dark and something hurt his friend : it was a syringe. The movie was a good comic movie, and they laugh a lot. At the end, the room was lighted and his friend look at his seat. There was something written with a felt-tip pen :"Welcome to the AIDS world !"

From the way it sounds, I don't think I'd go to the theaters in those neighborhood/areas either. I have been to the theater a couple of times in the past couple of months, they are always clean, and when I went there was only a half dozen to a dozen other people in that particular movie. Most of the theaters here in the U.S. are in malls or a nice area.

Hello palonghorn, You can't smoke now in theaters in Europe. I think that Spain and Greece were the last countries where it was allowed : it was terrible in the 70's, even for some smokers ! The majority of theaters are, like in your country, clean and in malls -- like Champs-Elysées, in Paris --, but there are some that are in bad areas and... not so clean ! They are perfect places for breeding an urban legend Thank you for your response.
