Irresponsibility

This post is a bit of a vent. I have these people living with me. They strung me along a month promising payment. Wednesday came, the day they were supposed to pay me. On Thursday I asked them for the rent. He told me he didn't get a chance to cash his check yet. Late that evening I texted them asking what is going on. She's in the hospital I'm told, in ER. So I waited until this evening and asked them again. I am now told the check he was expecting didn't come, they took it from him because he had been overpaid. The good news is they are leaving and none too soon. They will be by to pick up their stuff tomorrow, providing they get a ride. Meanwhile, I notice their cat had no food or water. The male is in the main area of the basement, so I saw his bowl was empty. His litter box had only a little litter in it and was full of poo. The female cat, who just had kittens a few weeks ago came out of the room and was carrying on. I went into the room and noticed the space heater was on. Now, we had got into a text message argument about leaving the heater on just 2 days ago, as it could cause a fire. They told me they would turn it off, blah blah something or another and told me not to be so rude to them. THEN they told me, as we kept carrying on about it, that they did not want to have this conversation anymore. They brought up the excuse the kittens needed the heater on, then they said they didn't want to come home to a freezer. Well, I have another tenant down there too and he has his heater on so it's not that cold. So of course when I saw the red light on, and especially since it has been so warm here (in the 70's the past 2 days) I was absolutely fuming. Plus, the momma cat had no food nor did she have water! I had to put more food down for her and of course water for her and the kittens. Can you believe this? I can't. I cannot fathom leaving my animals and not at least checking on them no matter what. Her litter box was even more full than the male cats, and hers has even less cat litter in it. O, I was fuming! I am still very upset. Those people are not far from here, they walk the distance to her moms almost every day. That is where they are now, and they, or he, couldn't stop in to check on their cats? They have no food in the room that I could see, nor a bag of litter to freshen the box. I fed the cats from my own bag. How can I let them get hungry like that? They both have lost weight just in the day or so those people were gone. Have you ever had tenants in your home that disrespected you and your home? Have you ever had someone abuse animals in your home?

I am sorry to hear about such irresponsible people. I don't have tenants in my house. So I have never experienced such things. But if I had to deal with tenants I think I will make a background check on them and ask for advance payment. I will set the rules clear and if they dont' oblige they will be asked to leave. I hope that the cats are well looked after. I will have a good talk with them. They seem irresponsible folks.

They text me last night to get their cell phone chargers, after I messaged them to say I fed the cats the last few days and they need to come get them. I told them to take the cats, they said they need the chargers to call for a ride. After going at this more than a few times, I finally just said look, you need to bring them food and litter. He came in so quiet my other tenant didn't hear him. He did clean the cat box and gave them food though, so at least they are taken care of. The female is now running to the door whenever I go down there, she wants attention. You are so blessed to not have to deal with this. I sort of knew these people from hanging out at a local restaurant, but I didn't know them well. We had a few conversations over the years. I never thought they would be like this. I guess it could be worse.
