Star ratings of a hotel is set by the franchise company or the brand and also the local Ministry of Tourism who has their own sets of standards to give the hotel a certain number of rating. In order for a hotel to be five star, there is a minimum number of rooms, a minimum size of the room and bathroom, all facilities should be in the hotel like Health Club with its gym, sauna, spa, swimming pool, etc., restaurants and bars, banquet halls, business center, lobby size should meet a certain minimum area, room amenities, etc. I used to work in a 5 star hotel but the hotel was already 20 years old. The Management and Franchise Company advised the owner that they need to renovate the hotel otherwise they can not carry the brand name anymore. Instead, they will have to carry the brand name of a 4star hotel under the same franchising company. Since the owner would like to maintain the 5star rating they were compelled to renovate the hotel. The hotel has only 280 rooms. Prior to this hotel, I also worked in a 4star hotel under international chain but the brand is only 4 star. This hotel has 320 rooms and now they expanded having 520 rooms. They have more F&B outlets and better quality of food than the 5star hotel I worked with. But since this 4 star hotel is carryinig a 4star brand, they can not be 5 star classified unless they will change their brand.

Okay well I am not sure if the hotel I worked out was five star but I am pretty sure it was. A five start hotel, in my opinion (as per me working there) is a hotel for mostly business people. Great customer satisfaction and support, if you want a different pillow, it's delivered post haste, if your meal isn't up to par then it's replaced etc. I was a banquet server, if you ever go to a hotel and get served by a person in a big room that is not a dining room, be thankful and kind to your server, they have it hard. They get up real early to start the day and prepare the table etc.
