Getting my own, new plan

I am in the process of moving out (I'm 19 and a non-traditional college student), and am looking for a new cell phone plan. I have been researching some different carriers' plan online, but I am getting totally lost. There are just so many things you can't find out by looking online- I mean, what is the service really like? are there a lot of places where you can't get service? hidden fees and whatnot? I am still on the plan my parent provide- probably will be so until this September- and it's a pay-as-you-go one, since I use the home phone for long conversations and stuff. When I'm completely move out [to southern california], I know for a fact I will be texting and calling more often, so I don't think the pay-as-you-go will be a great idea. Can anyone share some insight, maybe including plans I should avoid? I should also mention I'm on a pretty tight budget.

Sorry I'm late, I've been swamped with work and I'm way behind! I'm on a tight budget, too, and I've used Net 10 for the past 3 years. You buy a minimum of 150 minutes a month which is $15.00 and that's all it costs me because I rarely use it. The minutes roll over each month so you can store up hours!! The phone is only $10 when you buy a package that includes 300 minutes for $39.95. Or is it $29.95? Either way, it's way cheap!! The phone does very little beyond make and receive calls but I've never not had reception and I've traveled across the country with it.

Well before I go into detail let me give you a briefing about myself so that you know I have some clue about budgeting and having a cell phone. I am a single mother of six(17,14,12,10,&2) and I'm a blue collar worker. All but the two year old have cells. I know, your mind is probably doing tricks wondering how I do it. Well, pre-paid plans is how I do it. As you see I have a few teens/pre-teens (all girls by the way) who are talkers. First we had Alltel pre-paid and loved that. They had four different type plans that fit everyone of our needs. But then Verizon bought Alltel, and only part of their pre-paid plan fit our needs. We definitely need unlimited nights/weekends and texting and Verizon didn't offer that even though Alltel did. But, we found out that PagePlus a sister company of Verizon who uses Verizon towers did have unlimited. Unlimited Talk and Text for $39.95 and it comes with 20MB of web. Also, if you are not such an avid talker or texter you can get the Talk and Text 1200 plan for $29.95 plus 50MB of web. The 1200 indicates the number of texts and minutes of each you get. Yes, 1200 texts and 1200 minutes. We definitely have the unlimited. It is such the better value. Also, you don't necessarily have to buy a new phone from them. You can use and old Verizon phone that maybe a friend or family member previously owned. Also, don't forget about buy used phones from places like craigslist and ebay. And what's even better is, 9 times out 10 they can transfer your current cell number so you dont' have to worry about handing out a new phone number to friends and family. I have saved so much money not having a contract and worrying about the girls going over the minutes, paying for the latest phone, and no worrying about if we couldn't pay the bill. The amount I pay for three phones is less than what I've paid in the past for one phone bill with a contract. Remember, they use Verizon towers so you get coverage everywhere. And if you have a really good phone you can even get coverage in an elevator. I haven't had any drop calls in elevators or in the country(places that were typical of losing signal). I hope this has helped you. Just look for the owl..it's their mascot.

I like U.S.Cellar, they have some great plans. I have a family plan with three phones. I have after 7 p.m. and week ins free. All calls to another U.S.Cellar phone free. All incoming texts and calls free. The plan is also national, call any where in U.S. without roaming. I would check them out, I have good service.

It all depends on what you wanna do with your phone. If you're only looking to do text messages & voice calling, there are few options. I'm not sure how much you wanna spend every month but I know that t-mobile offers pretty cheap plans. Their only draw back is you have to pay full retail price for the phone. You can get on their 2 year contract but your monthly bill jumps up by $10. I used to be on their blackberry plan & I had unlimited everything. My bill was around $91/month. That included unlimited voice calling, any type of messaging, & blackberry data plan. Few days ago while I was on vacation, I dropped my blackberry into an ocean & I picked up a regular flip phone. When I called them up to switch my plan from blackberry to non-blackberry plan, my bill dropped by $10/month. Now I'm paying $59.99 which included unlimited voice calling & $10 extra which includes basic data. Nice thing about it is that I'm getting "pushed" emails like I used on my blackberry. $69.99 plus taxes & fees comes out to around $80 something a month. And that plan has no 2 year contract requirement which means I can leave anytime I want. T-Mobile seems to have pretty decent coverage around major cities. You shouldn't have any problem around California area. They also have other options & you might wanna look into it. Some other 3rd teir service providers, like Metro PCS or Crikets, have cheaper rates but their coverage is very limited. I personally think unlimited plan for $80/month is pretty good.
