April is Autism Awareness month. What are you doing for the cause?

What are you doing for Autism awareness? I haven't really thought about it because the kids are still on their spring break. I guess there are plenty things that a person can do for Autism Awareness. It might be something as simple as letting people know what resources are in the area. I thought about doing that since it took me so long to get the information I have. The worst part is I am still finding information for area resources. So, what are you doing if anything?

I work in a specialistic medical child day care centre that offers care to children with health conditions and/or disorders including autism, ADHD and many more. Also, my oldest neice has autism and I grew up with her so I have experience in having an autistic sibling aswell (she's like a sister to me). Through work and through my higher eduction I try to raise awareness. I like to talk to people about autism and fight the prejudges that are out there. Not just in april, but every chance I get .

I can only try to imagine what it must feel like to have a child with autism. I have a great deal of respect for the people who take care of their children and fight for their rights, respect and understanding day in, day out. Like I said in my first response my oldest neice (who is like a sister to me) has autism as well and when I am done with my higher education to become a pedagogue I hope to become a professional in this field of expertise so I hopefully will be able to raise awareness and help with early intervention.

I am glad to hear that there are others who are not parents that are autism advocates all year round. As parents we have to fight the prejudices everyday. I have found some understanding places that I can take my child and it is no big deal if he has a meltdown.

Hi Mommaj, We missed the series of activities here in the Philippines to celebrate the autism month. my kids just finish their school last week. anyways, we always make sure that we advocate for autism with our friends and in any occasions where we can share related information on autis.

Hi MsF., My kids will be going back to school on the 12th. I am thinking about making a newsletter to help parents find resources in this area for programs that are available. I don't want parents to struggle to find the information. It took the school over a year to give me info, I guess they thought the autism would go away? That was so ridiculous because a lot of the programs are for younger kids. It's actually really sad.

That's great. I am happy how you are in the area of advocacy on autism in your place. That is a good idea friend. go for it. it's so wonderful helping other parents cope and know where to go when in need of help and support from parents like us. I am proud of you!

This is the first I am hearing of it. I guess it is not on my radar and then again being out of the country for half the month probably didn't help.
