Official news has it that, Polish president Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria have been killed after their plane a Tupolev Tu-154 with 132 passengers crashed on approach to Smolensk airport in western Russia.
The president and his wife were on their way to attend a World War Two memorial service for the victims of the Katyn massacre which, in 1940, saw thousands of Polish prisoners of war murdered (primarily military officers), intellectuals, policemen, and other public servants by the Soviet NKVD, when the plane they were in, crashed before reaching the runway of Smolensk airport.
According to Polish government official it is learned that the head of the Polish army, the head of the presidential administration and Poland's National Bank Governor Slawomir Skrzypek were also on board the plane, along with the president's wife and families of other senior officials.
This is indeed a tragic and sad disaster for the Polish people. I just hope that the country will not go into a turmoil and that a new government will be appointed in due time.
I just hate to say this but air safety is really of the essence and I just hope that these communist countries will reconsider using these ancient and obsolete Tupolev aircrafts. I hope this disaster will bring about some necessary awakenings.

hello skysuccess,
I don't know why on Earth they would allow almost all government officials including the President and the first lady in ONE plane, shouldn't they're be a protocol they're in setting up different planes for other officials? they should investigate the plane and the one who made, they would personally held responsible just in case it proves that it was caused human error.

LetranKnight25,
I suppose we will never know the reasons behind this non observance of protocol here. Yet, another blatant disregard that their aircraft are really unsafe or rather unfit to fly at all.
Human error indeed. However, whether that is out of negligence or intentional will be the question every quarter would want to know the answers.
Take care.

I saw this on the news the day that it happened and it really saddened me. It wasn't because of the fact that I knew or was sympathetic to the president of Poland and his family. The reason that this saddens me so much is because of the fact that I have a friend from high school whose mother was killed in a plane crash here in Lexington four years ago and it has showed me how painful that kind of an incident can be to the survivors.
