Hi cycle, Welcome to the lot. The thyroid gland can have a large impact on not just your weight, but your ability to get the weight off. I struggle with it myself. The best you can do for yourself, is first find out if you have a low thyroid and then make sure you get properly nourished so you feel better. With thyroid problems, because it is hard to get rid of extra pounds, you have to be careful that what you do eat is highly nutritious without adding unnecessary calories. And keep the portions small, but well spaced, to help with energy. Exercise is vital to your well being, even though fatigue is often a problem. Even if you can only do a short walk to start, it is important to feeling better and getting the weight off, which will make you feel so much better too. You may find, that if your thyroid hormone is low, and you start on thyroid hormone replacement, other things will start working better too. I discovered my bowel function vastly improved, for instance. You may find your temperature is easier to manage. All the best!

The tests will show you whether your thyroid hormone is deficient, or if your brain is working overtime to produce more hormone, which indicates your thyroid is not working optimally. There is the T4 test, the actual measurement of thyroxine in your system and the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) test. I believe too, that there is a difference between "normal" readings for women and 'normal" readings for men. Here is a link that you might find helpful. http://thyroid.about.com/cs/testsforthyroid/ht/interpretresult.htm

Thyroid is a cancer and is very serious. I strongly recommend you have a checkup. There is medication available, but it is probably just a Placebo, the only long-term cure for obesity is indeed excercise.

A victim of hypothyroidism may put on weight and in a short period of time, may be very much obese. So it is always wise to get a thyroid checkup immediately. Do blood test for estimation of T3,T4 and TSH levels in blood.
