Paid companions only in old movies?

I love old movies and I am fascinated by the concept of paid companions. Mostly, a little more than middle aged ladies would be seen traveling through Europe, looking for rich husbands. In tow, would be a paid companion, driving or carrying the bags but keeping well out of the way when a man appears. Do these people exist today? That is either the hiring party or the companion. I was thinking that they might after noticing a few "Laurel and Hardy" type female couples here in Athens, Greece. Anyone wanting a fat old man as a companion can call me!

Lol! I've seen a few of these actually. It was a little bit different, because no one comes to Ohio to find a rich man. They called themselves "personal tour guides" and would show people that were visiting the hot spots around the city and help with baggage and things like that.
