Sunday dinners where always a big deal in my house growing up. My grandfather who was a cook would make these wonderful meals and all of my family would come over to eat. Years later, Sunday dinner is still a big deal but now it's just my family. Today i'm making bar-be-que chicken, baked mac and cheese, with some mixed veggies. I only cook like this on Sunday. What are you cooking today?

Yesterday I put some venison steak in the crockpot with some mushroom soup and garlic before going to church. Came home and made mashed potatoes, green beans and warmed up some rolls. It was very good.
Sunday is usually a big meal for us also, I guess just because there is more time, so it is more relaxed and the whole family is together.

I find myself lucky sometimes especially if I am a bit lazy to cook dinner on Sundays cause my husband and I can just go to his parents house and we eat dinner there. There are also times that I feel lazy to cook some food for lunch so I always just tell my husband we will be going to my mother-in-law's house and eat there. They also wanted us to be there so I dont have to worry most of the time.

Before I was married, our weekend(our weekend was Thurs/Fri) lunch and dinner was an elaborate affair because Friday was the only day when all of us were at home together all the time. Mom would cook a typical South Indian meal because that was the only time we could have something that elaborate. But now, my husband works over the weekend and our sunday is just like any other day...just me and the kids.

I wish our family had a tradition of eating a big dinner together. The only time we get together with family for big dinners are holidays or birthdays. I wish we got together more. I tried to get them to do it like once a month, but no one seemed interested in it. For just my family we usually do a family breakfast on Sundays. We'll make huge amounts of food, a little of everything usually. Usually waffles, bacon, eggs, toast, sausage and sometimes cut up fruit. It's nice to all sit around the table together and eat.

that's good enough. that's the way it is now with my family. since my grandfather passes many years ago we don't do that big sunday any more. but i make sure my family does it. and we love it. i think doing a family breakfast with your family is a great way to connect with each other.

34momma, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a family Sunday Dinner; it's vital to life and health. To me, it generally means comfort food, as in anything with mashed potatoes - meatloaf, roast chicken, pot roast, steak, etc. With steak I also make creamed spinach and creamed corn.
If I'm making prime rib, I like baked stuffed potatoes and broccoli or asparagus hollandaise, or a melange of vegetables.
Another great favorite for Sunday is the classic spaghetti and meatballs, or even better "manzo de pranzo" as I have heard it called. It's a feast of meats, like meatballs, sausage, chicken, bracciole, even ribs or other pork or beef cuts in what turns out to be the most fabulously rich (after cooking about 7 hours) Italian "gravy" (tomato sauce) to be served with pasta. It's good also with antipasto or salad, garlic-cheese bread, and makes week-long leftovers.
