Do you give to cancer research?

cancer research charities - donating to cancer research

I just bought a ticket for a raffle where the proceeds go to cancer research. I’ve known some people whose lives have been touched by cancer, so I thought that this was a worthy cause. I don’t have much money to spare, and I don’t like spending on unnecessary things, but I made an exception to this. I think a little sacrifice would be good for me. And it doesn’t hurt that there is a 46” LCD TV up for grabs. So, where have you given money to? What charities do you always give?

I'm part of a Relay for Life team. They raise money for the American Cancer Society. My best friend's sister had lymphoma and she survived it. So after going through all that she decided she wanted to give back and raise money for it and started the team. We do different fundraisers throughout the year. Money is tight for us too, so this is my way of giving to charity.

Hello ravinskye. Sometimes, I have difficulty understanding why not a lot more people contributing to cancer charities. That the only people really giving back to charity are only the people whose lives have been touched by this disease. I hope more and more people give back. Money is tight for everyone, but I'm sure we could help even in our own little ways. Thanks for help, and for your response in this discussion.

I actively give to cancer research whenever i can. Nearly 4 years ago i lost my husband to pancreatic cancer. I do whatever i can if it will help in the smallest way to a cure for this horrible disease that still plagues us!

Sorry to heat about your loss. Maybe through research, and contributions such as yours, one day we will all look back at cancer as an unncessary plague that had the cure all within our grasp. Thanks for responding.

The main charities I give to are Marie Curie Cancer care (their nurse was wonderful to us all in my fathers final days); The Donna Louise Trust (a hospice for life limited children and young people); and towards cancer research. Many people slate them and say they should have found a cure but, there are so many different types and variants of cancer that there is no single "cure". If we look at how screening, testing and treating cancer has improved over the years, I think we can see that its money well spent. I have lost several relatives to cancer over the years but most of them had their lives prolonged with a reasonable quality of life, thanks to the advances which have been made. Good luck,I hope you win the telly!

Thanks, I sure do hope I win it! Some people don't really realize the advances directly attributed to cancer research. But, I guess these are just people who don't really have first hand experience with the disease. Thanks for the response.

I believe in cancer research , it can help a lot of suffering people out there who don't even deserve to be sick with cancer. Life is unfair huh? Well I donate whenever I can with whatever I could (in small amounts of money, since that's all that I could afford). I also give to the local church here because I can see it really does feed a lot of poor people here in my country. It's a good thing that I can see where my money is going to.

I think that is what really is needed. A lot of people just need to see where their money goes, if they indeed gave to charity. So, they could at least feel the good deed. If a lot more charities did the same, I'm sure a lot more people would give whatever they can. Thanks for the response.

I am the type of person that will buy a raffle ticket aswell as donate things to alot of these charitys like the cancer research, heart foundation as i think these charitys are a great thing as the government are not doing alot if anything to support the charitys.I also put clothes in their charity bags aswell that come round as this also makes money for them to help other people aswell as people in the future.

I guess in some ways, we do what we can. Like you said, we can't really rely on the government to solve all the problems we have. Maybe like in our area, the government is preoccupied with other things. I also try to give out clothes and toys to charities. Instead of piling them on a landfill, other people are making good use of it. Thanks!

to be honest I stopped giving to charity once I found out that most of the people that work in the local charity shops are mostly volunteer's yet the management of the charities earn 40k plus a year. I also don't agree with charities coming round the door begging for money. If I want to give I used to but I don't anymore.

I've heard about these. They actually hire somebody to run the charity. I guess like in the private sector, you'd have to put somebody with experience to take charge of the charity, so they could achieve donation targets. I've also seen some charities where the leadership was composed of volunteers. I didn't see any direction for those kind of organizations. Thanks for the response.

Hello cher913. I guess you would have first hand knowledge about these diseases, and how badly the charities need help. I hope people reading this would take it upon themselves to contribute to their own charities. Thanks.

i would give if i really thought it was going to be put towards finding a cure. i however think there is a cure and because of money they will not allow it to come to the forefront. think about how many doctors and hospitals would lose money if there were such a cure? it is all about big business and to me that is a very scary thing.

Because there are so many different types of cancer, I dont think it will ever be possible to find a cure as such but, all the improvements (in finding causal factors, diagnosis and treatment) that take place as a result of the research they do is very much appreciated by those affected by cancer.

As in everything in life, there would be bad elements even in organizations with the very best of intentions. There would always be people that would lose sight of the goal, and will be blinded by money. I just have faith that there are more good people out there. And for those whose lives have been touched by cancer, I know that every little bit of help is welcome.

well I dont give to charity I once did a sky dive for 2 charities cancer re-search and diabetee's uk. I raised over £2000 and split it between the 2 charities. Now I get letters twice a month asking me to donate again, I also get magazines and free gifts how much is that costing them everytime they send me a gift or a magazine totally wasting their money. I have asked them to stop sending me stuff and they keep sending me stuff, this been going on for about 3 years so the money I raised for them they have prob spent over the last 3 years sending me gifts and magazines and letters etc etc

I think that's the problem. Once they have you on their "list" they keep asking for more and, as you say, the stuff they send you plus the mailing costs mount up and its money which could be put to better use. I suppose they do need to spend a bit on publicity but they could be more frugal with the money thats been raised by good people such as yourself.

I had a similar experience where I donated to a 'retired police charity'. After the first year, they kept sending me gifts and kept asking me to donate again too. I kept declining, but still I kept getting the letters and the calls. It only stopped when I had to move, and get a new phone number.

I dont think Ive ever given to cancer research, I prefer to give money to cancer hospital wards, as then you know where your money has gone and even though cancer research will improve things in the future, some hospital wards need improving now. Although saying that I do buy raffle tickets for loads of different charities so I probably have bought one at some point. I do agree with giving to charity but I like to see where the money goes to.

Hello Auntiscarf. I'm almost embarassed to say that's just what I do with charity. Buy some raffle tickets for the good of something. But it I do hit the big times, and I had money to spare, that would be my thinking too. Give the money where it is most needed now! Thanks for the response!
17 Apr 10
I dont think you should be embarrased to be buying raffle tickets without knowing the charity, at least you are giving a bit. I do think that if I won the lottery I would give money to both cancer wards and research, like I said research is needed, but while Im not rolling in money I prefer to give it to places that can have an impact straight away. I also think that all these people that earn millions every year should be forced to give money to charity, Im sure most of them do but the way I think, if you earn x amount of millions a year, you really should be doing your bit, I think every little helps but right now Im only able to give a couple of pounds here and there, I keep imagining what I could do with millions in the bank, I would obviously be able to do a lot more to help.

Hi..This is a really critical point for people..I can spend my money for everybody who needs money but I don't have enoug money to do this yet..However my best dream is spending my money for people who need money when I start to earn a lot of money, I hope..Moreover I believe cancer researches and searchers and I don't wanna talk about them badly but in our world people are really very bad and unfair. Therefore there must be some people or organizations to follow works about health..

I've been affected by cancer. But, for cancer research, I don't really understand what they do. Obviously they research cancer, but they never seem to justify what they do and I'm never aware of any new findings that they have. They earn so much through donations, but I don't know. Is it lost in admin costs like so many others? Personally there's no charities I always give to. If I help a charity I'd rather give them my personal help, so I can see how I'm helping.

Hello shoeface. I know what you're saying. That we don't really see where all these money go. If they do research, we would expect to see some results. But I am optimistic that we'd find a cure. And it may even happen in my(our) lifetime. Thanks for the response.
