VirtualDub is a basic video capture and editing software free under Windows : http://www.virtualdub.org/ LiVES is a good and free video editing software for GNU/Linux, BSD, Solaris and MacOSX Leopard. You can run it under Windows and MacOSX with a LiveCD. It is developed since 2002 and is now stable and professional : more than 50 video output formats available, unlimited tracts and effects, non-destructive editing. It is available here : http://lives.sourceforge.net/

topffer is right, I used this software many times. It has great features. It is under Open source, and free to use. Basically it is made for .avi files. You can put logos, subtitles, add sound track, change video sizes, and many more. It is very fast and reliable software. Have a nice day.

Hello Ghen13, if you are looking for the best and professional editing softwares, I can suggest you Final Cut Pro(Macintosh only), Adobe Premiere, Cyberlink Power Director, Corel Video Studio Pro etc. However, there are many more softwares in the video editing world. As far as editing is concerned the interfaces and the tools are almost similar but most of the times ease of use, quality of output and price etc. makes the difference. For starting point even Windows Moviemaker also can help you a lot. All the best....

I recomend you Corel VideoStudio, that's the former Ulead VideoStudio but now ulead is a corel company. It's really easy to use, I have used it for many projects and with good results. It may not be as powerful as Adobe Premier but give it a try. One video editor I'm waiting for is the VideoLan Movie Creator, that one will be awesome.
