i have strong desire to figure out this whim..Help

there is a saying"practice make perfect".but just few days ago i 've read a passage from Alfred North Whitehead -universities and their functions. i do agree with him.especially one of his thesis that is"prolonged routine work dullls the imagination".i mean.i experience that kind of situation a lot.and suffer a lot in reality. but "practice make perfect "is also agreeable to me. so that two statements is conflicted.there is some contradictions between them.but i just cant figure out some reasonable explaination for myself .so can somebody discuss this contradiction with me? just want to give myself an excuse to live in this world.lol~
