MVP's irrevocable resignation: Should he or should he not

Philippines

Ateneo has asked MVP to reconsider saying that the public apology was enough and there are still a lot of things to do. Some Ateneo professors disagree, that to reject MVP's resignation takes away the dignity of the resignation. Plagiarism is a serious offense, they say, and as an academic institution, Ateneo should treat it as a serious offense. What do you think? Should MVP resign after the plagiarism incident?

I didn't get to read the speech, so probably I am not in a position to comment. But if the irrevocable resignation is for being an alumnus, I think that is too much. An alumnus' pride is his alma mater, and vice-versa. Plagiarism is a crime, most especially in the academe. But if the speech is lacking only in giving credits, that may be forgivable. He could probably be not much of being a writer. But if in the speech he considered the quotes his brainchild, that is another story. But I have not heard of such a crime being penalized with imprisonment or whatever. This is a first time. Yet I suppose that UST should be letting go of Haydn Kho without this male nympho resigning.

The ADMU team will survive. The Blue Babble Battalion has strong support system. And Advocate, sorry, vanity is not my cup of tea. I won't ever be a Belo patient. Overheard at the university (dormers talking about their ID photos): Girl 1: Why can't we ever be as photogenic as those girls on tv? Girl 2: Don't you know, their faces were touched by Belo! Girl 1: That is too expensive. Can't afford it. Girl 2: That is why I allow mine to be touched by photo shop!

He resigned as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. I think he wants to disappear into thin air in the meantime. I wonder what will happen to Ateneo's basketball team. As for Hayden, hmm, I have to say that the humiliation that he received is more than enough. I think he stopped practicing medicine out of embarassment. I mean really, if you were his patient, would you be able to look at him without thinking of that video?

I think the said act was not intentionally done at all even MVP is not aware thats hes saying something that was just derived some someone else's speech. I think the resignation should be honored. As i man of his word MVP's mistake was serious although its not his fault he will still be liable at certain extent.

I don't think anybody would deliberately deliver a plagiarized speech. His problem was probably more of too much trust on his speechwriter. I have to agree with you. To make him stay is to expose him to a lot more awkwardness. Despite his enormous contribution, he also has to face the consequences of his action.

Yup, so that hes mistake wont be given much attention anymore he should at least vacate himself and try not to comment on the matter anymore. Since no matter what he will be doing right now wont matter to the general public. Its better not to comment and just resign and give himself a time to reflect on what had happend and try to make sure no similar incident will happen again.Good lord how i wish i will never be able to experience something like that ever haha

I guess they should really accept his resignation. Plagiarism is indeed a serious offense. He should have at least quoted the person who said/wrote them, that would've saved him.

I agree with you. You would have to be really made of sterner stuff if you have to return to the place where you were embarassed.

Well, for me, if he said he is sorry that is okey. Anyway, all of us has committed a sin.

This is funny. A person with such calibre to flagiarize, what for? He could very come up with his own speech for pete's sake. If MVP resigns let's all respect that. After all, he is more of a loss to Ateneo that the other way around. As they say, you can't put a good man down.

I'll answer your questions one by one. "This is funny" I don't get your humor it wasn't funny. "A person with such calibre to flagiarize, what for?" We don't know the reason why he plagiarize but the point is he did. "He could very come up with his own speech for pete's sake" Maybe he could come up with his own but he didn't and that's a violation of sec 177.2, 177.6 and 177.7 of the Intellectual Property Rights Law. Sec 177.2 Dramatization, translation, adaptation, abridgement, arrangement or other transformation of the work; Sec 177.6 Public performance of the work Sec 177.7 Other communication to the public of the work "After all, he is more of a loss to Ateneo that the other way around" Being a necessity doesn't put you above the law. "you can't put a good man down" I agree but "good" is very subjective. What's good to you might not be good to the guy next to you.

I am so annoyed with how the media handle this situation. The headline news says, MVP "Borrowed" some lines in his graduation speech. Give me a break, borrowed? what's that? It is plagiarism not mere "borrowing" I don't care if Ateneo will accept or reject MVP's resignation. It's their prerogative but a question still lingers in my mind; "What if an average Ateneo student committed such offense?" Will it be treated the same way? There are annoying columns in the web defending MVP's move. One of course is from Ateneo alumni and Smart Gilas standout (MVP-backed national team) Chris Tiu. Just read it, http://chris-tiu.blogspot.com/ MVP was even put atop a pinnacle of greatness for such a disgraceful act.

As of yesterday, MVP tendered his irrevocable resignation. He said that this has caused so much division in the Ateneo community that he just wants to end it all. On one hand, I can appreciate MVP's dilemma. He works hard and probably has little time for other matters. I understand that he had help in doing his speech, who could have borrowed the lines of other great people BUT should have made the proper attribution. I think that plagiarism is such a big temptation these days because of the internet. MVP must really trust his speechwriter (I suppose he has been fired now), that he did not bother to check. It was a simple matter of googling. At least he was a person enough to take full responsibility. Nevertheless, wrong is wrong, so he has to take the consequences of his action or inaction. As to Ateneo, I have seen Jesuits extend a merciful hand. They probably do not want to be viewed as un-Christian. They sometimes forget that Ateneo is more than the Jesuits, and as academicians, plagiarism is a major crime.

I believe his decision to resign over the plagiarism issue is just right. In the first place, although some parts of his speech is worth listeninghe is still responsible for using some of the statement or words from Oprah and Harry Potter books just to name a few of the original authors. Although he hold a higher rank in Ateneo, plagiarism is a serious offense and how he can be the ideal person for the student if he himself is doing the wrong things. Anyhow no one is perfect, but for me his decision is right to gain respect.
