http://www.page2live.com/2010/04/17/nancy-pelosi-palm-beach-party-had-more-security-than-guests/#more-22102 When she showed up for a private dinner in Palm Beach, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi walked into the home of businessman and Democratic moneyman George Cloutier with a security detail 12 strong, mostly US Capitol Police. There were four additional Palm Beach cops. And two sheriff’s deputies. Oh, yes! Two police boats in the Atlantic Ocean, across the street from Cloutier’s house. And with 18 guests at the dinner last weekend, the wingding had fewer guests than lawmen! Do you think this was overkill? Do you think the tax payers should foot the bill?

It may seem like overkill but in matters of security it is not her decision. The Security detail does what they feel is necessary to protect her.

laglen, maybe you can see a small detail but the people in charge of her security made the determination. As I said below, Palm Beach County had to be there because the Capitol Police do not have jurisdiction in Florida. Please keep in mind that there are terrorists who would love to take out anyone high up in our government and the Atlantic ocean presents a security problem because it is definitely not small and boats can be very fast. As Speaker of the House, she is a possible target.

I'm not surprised at anything this witch does. Having said that, she does need protection, and unfortunately we have to pay for such things. I'm sure, though, that deep down she was giggling over the fact that taxpayers were having to fork over the money to protect her.

Yes she does need the protection but I really think that since she was not doing the bidding of the majority, she should have to pay for it.

the DNC does not represent tax payers, it represents, like the RNC, politicians

I thought the Democrats were the majority? This was a DNC fundraiser...members of the Party do attend these.

She chose to go to the party, it is not like this was a government function. I have been to parties before and have never needed one bodyguard. Now some will say that she is more important than me, but how? I pay taxes that she spends. If she is so important that 18 people need to protect her then maybe she is to important.

The knee jerk reaction that is so evident on this board at all times has got to stop. Pelosi didn't make a call and order up a specific number of officers to make up her security detail. As someone else has already posted, she does not make that decision. Palm Beach County was also required to be there because they're the ones with jurisdiction and, yes, oceanfront property is vulnerable from the ocean. Pelosi did not have all of this because *she* believes she is someone special but because she currently holds the position of Speaker of the House. As far as the taxpayers footing the bill...she is entitled to security protocols because of the position she holds.

because *she* believes she is someone special but because she currently holds the position of Speaker of the House This statement I have to respectfully disagree. http://www.judicialwatch.org/news/2010/jan/judicial-watch-uncovers-new-documents-detailing-pelosis-use-air-force-aircraft

I don't know what judicialwatch.org's complaints about Pelosi's travel expenses have to do with the security detail that accompanied her to Florida. This discussion is supposed to be about that trip, not all of the ones she's made...unless I'm mistaken.

It does not surprise me. I hear she uses military planes when she travels...even on personal vacations. We pay for that too. She does need protection...but I agree this is a bit much. Especially at tax payer expense.

And to have all those police to keep her safe is really going over board. She should have to pay for them herself instead of it being put on the taxpayers. I would say 18 police and other guards is a little like over kill. She seems to have very little regard for other people money.
