Do you keep receipts?

After you go shopping [using a debit/credit] card, so you keep you receipts? I went shopping earlier today, and I noticed at the bottom of the receipt, it said "Retain this receipt for you records." I have a habit of leaving them laying on my desk for a week or so after I go shopping, and when I get around to cleaning off my desk I end up throwing them away. Is that bad? I've never had any problems using cards before (and I hope to not have any!), but should I be keeping receipts?

I don't have a credit or debit card -- I use cash for my purchases. I keep all of my receipts, mostly in case I want to return or exchange the item. Also, I like to keep them for my own personal records. Like if I was wondering how much a certain item cost, I could look at the receipt to know. I don't organize my receipts. I pretty much just have them stacked in a little pouch from earliest to most recent. I think people should keep their receipts for at least several months because aren't they needed if you are ever audited? I'm not sure though. Also, if you use a credit card, the receipt is useful in case you have extra charges on your card, you can show the receipts for proof of the cash amounts.

I only keep the receipts for the following reasons: medicines - because they are reimbursable to my company. credit card receipts - because I can exchange them for freebies. purchases with warranties - so I can still exchange products if I see something wrong with them. grocery receipts (sometimes)- to compare prices And the rest goes to the bin.

When it comes to groceries I don't usually hold onto the receipts for long. Though I don't usually throw them away either. I get rid of them a different way. Now when it comes to more pricey items I usually hold onto the receipts until they aren't needed anymore (like when the warranty is no longer valid). However, I wouldn't be surprised if I have some laying around the house though. LOL Happy mylotting!

I keep all of my receipts. I always take my receipts and keep track of how much I spend on what with an excel program. I like to know what I spend monthly. That way I can adjust my budget or spending habits accordingly. I keep mine in one of those brown envelopes (large kind) for each month. This includes all money spent, gas receipts, electric bill, water bill, rent receipt for each month, groceries, etc.

I always keep receipts I just throw them all in a old shoebox. Mostly I keep them in case the stuff I buy breaks because I am then able to easily find the receipt and take it back to swop or get repaired.

Receipts are useful incase to return the item that are purchased may be due to fault and not working once after its owned.so receipts can be maintained in a file for sometime until it may be useful for any purpose.

Yes, I actually do. I keep it until the bill arrives to have an update as to what I bought etc. Well, I actually don't keep the actual receipt because over time it will fade, therefore I record and scan it. That way anytime there's a problem with the transactions, I can have supporting papers to prove it. It's a good habit to keep receipts but it's also good to have specific time to keep it and throw it away, else you'll be accumulating a lot of trash in your home.

I always keep them then shred them after a year. I keep them in an empty tissue box just in case I should need them. I think you can't be too careful with receipts, you never know when you will need them for your taxes, a return or simply as a tool to establish and fine tune a budget.

I don't keep recipts. I think it is an extra burden after buying the things. I usually take the recipts with me to home. Once I reach home and take the things out of the shopping cover, I throw the recipts in the garbage bin. The only recipt I keep is the latest transaction recipt from the ATM. That is for my refernce. Any time I can go back to check teh moneyy in my account. My husband used to keep reciepts for some time becuase he had a scholarship paying for all his expenses for one month, when he went for research.

I am a receipt saver. i like to keep receipts handy for a reasonable amount of time. After that i usually sort through them to see what i really need to keep or what i can safely throw away. Keeping receipts is a good way to show proof of payments or purchases. Better to be safe than sorry.

well i tried something different, i take a picture and save it in my accounts or scan the important receipts and eliminate the paper, is the easiest way to do that. but just for the record. you should use an iphone application to manage that, like homebudget that let you take a picture of the receipt and add it to an expense.

I do not keep my receipts unless it is for buying electronic appliances or gadgets which come with warranty period. Because when you want to send for repair in case of malfunction during the warranty period, you'll be asked for the receipts for verification purposes by the customer service officer. For this category I will keep the receipts in a plastic container, make copies if necessary if the receipts are on thermal print which will fade as time passes.

My bank will send me the detailed list every month. So I will keep the receipts after shopping. And then I will check it with the bank list to see whether the payment is correct. After that, I will throw away the bank receipts. I love China

Oh yes! I do keep receipts. I keep them and use them for 2 things. 1 is that it helps me understand my finances much better. I enter those figures in a book. Apart from that, there have been times when I have had to return or exchange goods. Without those receipts that would not have been possible. I do clear out receipts every few weeks, so that I don't end up collecting too much junk.lol Hope you have a great day!

I only keep receipts for item warranties. When the warranty worn out, it will be straight into the garbage bin coz I don't have any use of it anymore :D

I used to and in fact I keep some important ones, but I usually throw those that are not so important. Just imagine keeping all of those receipts. Your house will soon be covered with all those pieces of paper. It is impossible to keep all those receipts. What for? You only need probably just the receipts for major payments, but then again, you don't want to keep them for a long, long time.
