E.G.Simons Ruskin Fl is where we spent our spring break. By we I am reffering to my husband and myself along with 6 children ranging in ages from 6 to 18. The campgrounds are currently working on the bathrooms for the east campgrounds and will not be allowing any TENT camping on that side for the next two weeks. If you have an RV that is the side if you want big spots. West side had some ok sized spots but not anything I would call big. This is not a roughing it kind of camping trip so if you are a beginner and want to ease into the camping experience this is the place. Everything is very clean and well groomed though there are few trees so bring the sunscrean. Inlets off the bay bring the water to the backside of each campsite which is great if you have a boat and/or like to fish. We launched our boat when we got there and tied it off right at our site. Then when we wanted to go out there is no waiting to launch just hop on and go. The beach is ok it's very shallow so if you have little one's thiey will love it but it's not the best example of Floridas beachs. One major bonus is that boat owners are 15 - 20 min away from the Big Bend power plant and the beautiful manatee that flock to it's warm water. (PLEASE cage your props before entering manatee areas!) We got to see dolphin several times dureing our stay and for a few hours every day the inlet was full of these weird little jelly fish with no tenticles. The kids thought that they were the coolest things. There were a few in the swimmming area as well and I bumped into them alot, no stings so they seem to be safe. Not recommending that you go messing with them though. Each spot had power and water and there are more than enough showers and toilets for a campground that rarely sees big crowds. There are several little parks and informational displays along the roads. There are also several bird nest boxes located through out hte area and they all have different birds in them to look at. There were a few flamingo sightings and lots of fishing. We didn't catch anything but I honestly didn't expect to with a hyper 6 year old in thte boat. LOL Overall this was a cute little trip that was relaxing and quite (with the exception of one night when our neighbors did a 30 min really great guitar and bongo session IT ROCKED and was over before quite time) but not too far from nature. If you want simple family camping without the need to bear proof your food and such then E.G.Simons is a good place to head. Happy camping friends!
