Hi, I sure hope you don,t listen to the person who said hit your cat !! Never do this, they do not respond to pain anymore than we would. First take your cat to the vets, it may have an infection or some medical reason for this action. If it checks out ok, go through your house and clean any place that they peed. They will go back to a scented area, also get a spray that removes the scent. Make sure you clean the litter box at least once a day , many times its just a dirty box that starts them in this habit, if they are not sick. Another option is to toilet train your cat. I,ve got three cats all ages, and this is what I,ve done. No more scooping for me !! I hope this helps, its really not the kittys fault, cats are extremely clean animals.

So.. did you move or did something change to start this behaviour? If she is not fixed that is usually a big problem. What about getting checked for diabetes because apparently that is a sign.

We had trouble with our cat and I bought her the urinary trac formula cat food and started feeding her that, once I did the peeing stoped. She was much older then your cat, but they can get the trac problem at any age, so if this somthing new for her to be doing you might want to get a small bag and try it. I have had cats that when the cat litter gets dirty they won't use it. Maybe you need a new cat pan if the litter is 'clean'. OR have you changed brands of cat litter recently? She may not like your new brand. It might be the location of your cat pan too, although it doesn't sound like she is bashful about where she goes. Also if you have changed to one of the covered cat pans she might be telling you this is not what she wants. I had one cat the bottom line was Absolutly, under no circumstances was he using that cat pan! I even put him in the bathroom with the pan and shut him in, he would go next to the pan. We live in the country and he became an out door cat! I hope these ideas help. Let us know how you make out.

Before you start smacking your cat around and making her afraid of you, maybe you should do some analyzing. First what kind of litter are you using in the litter box? Maybe the litter formula has been changed and the cat doesn't like it. Or maybe the box isn't clean enough for her. If I don't clean the litter box daily the cats will use a potted plant or alternative place to do their pooping. I have four cats so they do fill a box quickly. Also I wash the litter box out at least once a month so that any build up of odor is removed. Are you using a cardboard box or a plastic litter tray for the litter? Is the litter scented or unscented? Some cats don't like the scented litter and will pee anywhere else than a box that smells like a flower patch. When is the last time you had the cat to the vet? It could be a UTI (Urinary tract infection) or an irritation of the bladder. Also it could be kidney stones (yes cats get them) or a reaction to the cat food. If you are feeding her dry food, has that recipe been "improved" which means that they changed the recipe. Is she spayed? If so when did she get spayed? It could be a reaction to the spaying. Are you cleaning up the areas that she is peeing on? Clean the areas with warm sudsy water and then rinse them down with vinegar. Then spray an odor neutralizer such as Nature's Miracle on the areas. You can clean the sofas with a rental steam cleaner and there are pet odor cleaners that you can use in the steam cleaners to neutralize the odor of the urine. Swatting the cat isn't going to do anything but make the cat run when she sees you. A squirt of water will help stop the peeing, but it doesn't get to the root of the problem. You need to check the box, location (NEVER put the cat's food close to their litter box. They won't eat where they pee and poop and won't pee and poop near where they eat.) and the litter you're using. Also make sure that the box is clean, use scoopable litter so that you can clean the box and not using a ton of litter. The scoopable litter is a finer grind and is softer on the cat's feet and more acceptable to them. Then check the cat out to see if she might have a medical problem. From the sounds of it, she is looking for a softer place to do her business, so maybe it's the litter.

Has anyone thought it could be a medical reason and the cat has a kidney infection. Take the cat to the Vet. Ask the Vet what to do.

I have a very good method to discourage naughty behaviour in animals, all you need is a water pistol. I used this method to stop Moomin peeing in the house, every time I caught him lifting his tail, he got a squirt of water. He soon got the message AND it's a humane and kind way to teach your cat.
