I have never claimed to be an intelligent person but nowadays just on mylot i see words that i have no idea what they mean. I always research them but sometimes i don't get the full meaning to satisfy me. Yesterday a friend of mine said she was agnostic. Do u know what that means? cAN U EXPLAIN IT TO THIS tennesseean in terms i will understand?Where do all these new words come from? Does the same thing happen to u?

No, there is a BIG difference between an atheist and an agnostic! An atheist categorically denies the existence of God (and all that spiritual stuff); an agnostic does not deny the existence of God and heaven but believes that one cannot know for certain whether or not they exist.
An atheist says "There is no God!"; an agnostic would say "There may be a God but how can you prove it?" (and perhaps "Does it matter, anyway?")

Hi Jo,
Being agnostic means, in easy terms, that I don´t feel I´m qualified to understand what "God" means. It is not like being atheist (that means you don´t believe there´s a superior being) but rather that my capacities as a humble human being do not permit a knowledge about that.
I go sometimes to church (although I don´t belong to any church in particular) but rather seek it as a place of peace. I like Christmas, I teach my grandchildren the story of Jesus (I see that as a symbol of the best kind of love there is).
The word agnostic is not new, Jo, but it is not used by everyone all the time. We are learning new words every day but we don´t realise it.
If you want a better explanation, I´ll check it up in the web and will try to put it as clearly as I can do it.
A big HUG!!!

u ARE RIGHT. tHERE ARE ALOT OF HYPOCRITES IN CHURCHES, NOT MY FAVORITE TYPE OF PEOPLE. As i said i don't think going to church is going to get u to heaven. I think it's the way u live. I'm hoping it will give me some peace of mind. That's something i'm in bad need of right now. I also think it's a good way to get me out of this house for a change & be around people which i need to.
it is horrible about the priests & so sad for all the children that have been mistreated for years & years. bless their hearts. if u can't trust your priest how would u ever trustanyone. I think we both know a good sharp knife is what they need. I think u are right about them marrying. Thanks for all your imput. Have a good one.

Yes, I have come across words that I don't know the meaning to. Yours is a new one to me. I also discovered that there is a dictionary on line that you can look up these words. So I learned the meaning of a new word...forgotthe word!...and I learned there is a dictionary online! But it is frustrating. A few weeks ago my 16 year old granddaughter was 'babbling' away and used a word and the deffinition she gave and I would have gave were worlds apart! Maybe we are going to have to learn new diffinitions. I have also discovered I can't spell anymore so please forgive. Another thing I have discovered, especially here with post, wow can you tell who does texting!!!! Some things I have to really reread to know what they are saying!!!!

There are a lot of those words out there. I looked for my old dictionary but I think I threw it away, it was never any help to me. I think I typed dictionary into the search bar thing at the top of the toolbar and up poped this dictionary so I typed the word in and it came up!
You have a pea brain!?! I keep telling people this is "the blonde, over 50, with only a high school education, trying to figure this out!"

I think agnostic pertains to being doubtful or someone who could not believe something. I think mylot is a place where we all learn something new from each other. I myself have learned a lot from myLot. This is one of the benefits of myLot and one of the reasons why I enjoy going to this place.

I like it when I see new words cause I always end up looking for the meaning and study how the word is being used in the sentence. Its a good thing to enhance your vocabulary. It is also one of the things I do to improve my skills in English. It is very helpful cause it helps me in the practice of my profession as a teacher.

It comes from a Greek word meaning 'to know' coupled with the prefix 'a-' meaning 'not'. A Gnostic is someone who knows about something (specifically God) and an agnostic is someone who claims not to know or to be unsure about the existence of God. The word was coined by T H Huxley to describe his own beliefs in about 1870.
The difference between an atheist and an agnostic is that an atheist denies the existence of God while an agnostic does not deny the existence of God and heaven but holds that one cannot know for certain whether or not they exist.

agnostic means you don't know if God exists and your not sure he does and in fact, you aren't even sure there is some supreme being and you are waiting for verification. Isn't like an atheist who doesn't believe in God, you just aren't sure there is one.

The word agnostic comes from the Greek: ?- a-, without + ???s?? gnosis, knowledge. Basically it means that the person doesn't know if something is true, hasn't found any convincing proof.

Hi Antique,
Yes, I know a little bit about what an agnostic is. It is a person that believes in the possibility of there being a God as well as the possibility that there may not be. It is a person looking for answers. Some people confuse them with atheists which is simply not true. An atheist just does not believe in God at all. The two are entirely different.

An agnostic neither believes nor disbelieves in God. They say that they just don't know if He exists or not.

also, im wondering what all this texting and abbreviations are about. i didnt know mylot allowed them but some of the newbie young ones are trying it. eeerrr! and thats just to hard.@ANTIQUELADY (36440)

I read the answers to your post Jo and I know that you understand now - although my unfavourite person did pontificate
What concerns me is that you said that you were not intelligent when I think that you are very intelligent and have so much knowledge on many topics. Please don't put yourself down. What you may have forgotten others will never know. You are a bright intelligent women and rejoice in it my friend.

Sometimes I run up on words I don't know the meaning of. If I will just take the time, I will look them up. An agnostic is somebody who doubts or is skeptical about whether there is a God or Christ. I see initials on the internet that I don't know the meaning of a lot. Kathy.

a tennesseean, talking about a new word she saw within the discussion of a friend. come to think of it, you are an English person. so much more of us, asian whom english is not our main language? well, jo, if that is just a word that you see and not knowing the meaning, then i can say i have seen a lot of new words that i really have to look up in the dictionary to know its meaning. in my stay on mylot for two years, i came across a lot of new words. and that made me improve, i guess, my english.

Have no idea on what that means or where it came from. It could be that your friend heard that from another person or that was used in a very old context or new context... There will really come a time that even if you know English well basic there will be Old English or New English words that will come up...
Need to read.... I feel like I'm going to school again looking up for words in the dictionary.. LOL...
