Does Your Partner Lick Their Plate At Meal-Times?

Yes, I know it's gross but I need cheering up. It seems our discussions are being "copied" elsewhere on blogs linked to MyLot - with the same admin! Lamb found out about it and we're all a bit unhappy..hence this discussion. So, anyway, does your partner lick their plate? By that, I mean, once all the meat and two veg has been scoffed do they lift the plate up to their face and lick the gravy off? Yes, I am afraid my husband does this. He seems to think that sitting in front of the television instead of at the table with me gives him free rein to do what he likes. The rest of his family eat like pigs as well. I even spotted him licking his plate at my Mum's house! She was outside at the time but I did tell him off about it. I mean, come on, she's taken the trouble to cook for him and he does that. Has he done it in public? YES!! But only the once. I told him NEVER to do it again because I was so embarrassed!

Yeah, bummer, looks like Lambie's leaving over that whole flap too... :-( Nope, he doesn't lick his plate. I've seen my son do that once or twice, I don't think he does it any more, at least not where I can see him.

I love my gravy as much as anyone but if I can't get it off the plate with my fork and some other thing to sop it up (ie potatoes), it stays on the plate...

He only does it when I overdo the gravy...so I make sure I don't overdo it...usually!

OMG Janey sorry that you have to go through that type of embarrassment. I have never seen or heard of anyone doing that till now. I guess the blame must come from his upbringing. Does his other family members do the same thing?

I've not personally witnessed them doing it as I don't make a point of dining with them but what I have seen (in Las Vegas and the odd times here in Carlisle) they have the same mannerisms when they eat as John does. Sometimes, John makes a sucking sound with his food and his Dad does exactly the same. All of his family eat like their lives depended on it. I have often said to him, "John, it's not your final meal, you don't really have to eat that fast," but it's a habit he can't shake off, it seems. His nephew eats like a pig as well..head down right into his food, it's disgusting. In fact, I'm being kind to pigs! My Dad also annoys my Mum because he doesn't use a knife at home (just the fork) but whenever they go out for something to eat, which is rare these days, he will use a knife! It was funny when me, Mum, my nephew, John and his parents, went for a posh meal at a steakhouse restaurant in the Planet Hollywood hotel in Las Vegas 2 years ago. You could tell that the in-laws and John felt uncomfortable in their surroundings but my side of the family were in their element as it was such a lovely place to eat. The first meal we had (elsewhere) was a different story, however, as it involved burgers with sauces on, piled high in huge buns. You get the idea with "that lot" as I've never heard so much sucking going on in my life. Mum couldn't finish hers because she felt ill listening to them all at their troughs lol.

Thank god my partner doesn't do this, or I would be very ashamed too! He just likes eating everything on his plate, and when he eats chicken he makes sure that no meat is left, only bones. I think this is a very good habit because he doesn't waste food like so many people do, including me.

The lickin of the plate thing is the only negative from hubby. He, too, eats everything at amazing speed. He will eat my left-overs too if there are any. He will go "Ruff" like a dog which kinda sums him up really!

Mine never does. This puts me in mind of school when I was about 6 years old. We were all sitting in the dinner canteen and the head mistress said that the person with the cleanest plate ,would get a prize but please no licking. Well the girl who won did lick her plate and lots of us saw her do it but it was the 60's and you didn't tell tales on others (you most likely would have got punished for doing so) , so we all watched in silence as she received her prize. No idea what the prize was ,it was so long ago.

Oh dear! That's not the most honest way of winning something is it? Just goes to show that anyone can cheat, no matter how old they are. Still annoying for those who don't though. As for my brother, he used to cheat at draughts. Whenever I went to the toilet, I'd come back and he'd do this move all over the board and would say, "I've won!" To my credit though, I never did it back to him. Wouldn't lower myself to his level. Haha!

messy eater! - what a mess!
that was soOoOoOo gross! i think that was so improper, just by imagining it,i really can't handle! i never meant someone doing that.but when i do,i think,i'll have the courage to tell that person to stop it right away, even if i really don't know him.haha i'll surely tell him in a proper way. as you've said,it's really embarrassing! even if your in your own home, try to avoid doing that, you can use spoon and fork for that instead! my father usually is untidy when it comes to eating. but he does not do that. he just so messy when he's eating and the pieces of rice gets all over the table. imagine,he's using spoon and fork that time!what if he doesn't? how messy it gets!but not like what we're talking about here, which is soOo gross!

The only positive thing out of this is that hubby never leaves his food. I agree though; it is gross licking the plate. Thank God he doesn't have gravy every day!

Hi Janey... I have seen people doing all kinds of unwanted activities at the dinner table, but never seen one licking the plate. It would be appreciated by the cook, of course. And one could overlook it, if he did it once. But it seems as if he is doing it all the time. Does he like the food wherever he eats? I doubt that! In my country, the elderly people tell us, never to leave any food on the plate. They consume each bit of food on the place. They don't pick up the plate. They simply rub the fingers on the plate and collect all the food and lick the fingers. I trust your hubby feels the same way about food. He doesn't wish to waste it. Just my thoughts!

Naaah, he's just a pig lol...and that's being kind to the pig! To be honest, he doesn't do it ALL THE TIME as I haven't got my beady eyes on him constantly watching how he eats as I'm concentrating on my food. On the odd occasion I've seen him do it I just tell him how disgusting it is. Then he shrugs his shoulders and says something like, "that was nice!" Meaning the food of course. I suppose it's better than him leaving the food and saying it was horrible. The only thing he won't eat is Yorkshire Pudding! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yorkshire_pudding

Hmmm. That's a strange thing to do. After a meal I don't think I would enjoy licking the plate. The gravy would be going cold and congealed I should imagine, plus there would be a risk that I would empy some into my lap! _Derek

Exactly! Amazingly, he's never spilled any onto his top. Usually, I try not to give him too much gravy, then he manages to do what normal people do and eat properly with his knife and fork. That reminds me of something else he does at times...shoves the knife in his mouth making this sucking noise. Why did I marry him lol. I'm sure Prince Charles doesn't lick his plate and suck his knife!! Haha!

I've often compared my husband to a dog...as he will finish off any of my food that I may leave on my plate. At least we rarely have any wasted food!

Ha!ha!ha! What a gross! I'm happy I've not seen my hubby doing that otherwise I'd be so turned off. I mean I married a human being and not a dog so I would not want my man to act like a dog. My hubby has always observed table etiquette. Ha!ha!ha!

Sometimes he will have food in front of him and - by the time I've got through half of mine he's finished it. Never gets indigestion either which you would think he would do with him having the plate on his lap, leaning over it lol.

Janey,,no, my husband does not lick the plate and I can assure you this, If he did it just once, it would be the last time!!! Sorry, but that is just unacceptable. Even in the privacy of your own home. Its nice to be complimented on a nice meal, but I think words surfice just fine.. What I'm really interested in is your statement about our discussions being copied? Can you tell me what exactly you mean and how you discovered ths? I'm not sure I understand what your talking about..Thanks Janey..

Hi sunnycool, I'm doing just fine thank you! Well, it seems you have better manners than my hubby, which is what I expected. You have standards, correct? At least he helps me with the washing-up and is very supportive in other ways too, so the odd time he does lick his plate..I should kill him!!!
