with little or no funds, what would you do?

If you had a chance to lead a small school of disabled persons in a third world country with little or no funds, what would you do? I've been impressed with this concept of social enterprise. Wikipedia defines it as a social mission driven organization which apply market-based strategies to achieve a social purpose. The main aim of a social enterprise is to generate profit to further the social and or environmental goals being independent on charitable donations and grants as well as a vehicle for social change. Hi Tom, Have you heard of this FILIPINO CNN HERO OF THE YEAR FOR 2009, MR.EFREN PENAFLORIDA?...He is actually our hero, the first Filipino nominated and to win the top prize by CNN for his innovative KARITON KLASRUM (PUSHCART CLASSROOM) ADVOCACY.His program conducts weekly visits to poor and underserved areas in some part of LUZON here in my country Philippines, to teach young people basic lessons in Mathematics, English and Science using only a specially designed push cart and even after being awarded as 2009 CNN Hero of the Year, he remained humble and continue holding weekly lessons and hopes that it will encourage other people to lend time to help others in need. We, Filipinos are inspired of what Mr.Penaflorida said: "OUR PLANET IS FILLED WITH HEROES, YOUNG & OLD, RICH & POOR, MAN, WOMAN OF DIFFERENT COLORS, & SHAPES & SIZES. WE ARE ONE GREAT TAPESTRY. EACH PERSON HAS A HIDDEN HERO WITHIN, YOU JUST HAVE TO LOOK INSIDE YOU & SEARCH IT IN YOUR HEART & BE THE HERO TO THE NEXT ONE IN NEED." We can lead even with a little or no funds, as long as we have the passion to help others in a simple form of giving knowledge we can already make a difference. We can't gain recognition immediately at one time but the world will then see us through those people we are helping at present.

Hey Mack Your comment has touched the bottom of my heart. While I may not have heard of Mr Penaflorida, silly me, I can understand how great his achievements are. Mr Penaflorida is certainly a great role model for all, not just for Filipinos. May his work continues to grow and benefit many. Thank you so much for sharing Mack. It has been a great learning journey for me. Have a nice day. Take care!

Mr.Penaflorida received $100,000 to fund his work in the DYNAMIC TEEN COMPANY (DTC), a volunteer organization that he put up to conduct his "Kariton Klasrum". Mine tom, I would like to teach young aspiring artists ages 5yr old to 12 yr old in our neighborhood about visual arts & sculptures. Somehow, I can help mold young artists' minds as early as their age.I will make use of some alternative cheap materials.Who knows the world will recognize me someday?...:)

I agree with you. I believe by helping it enriches the giver as well and makes him/her feel good about himself/herself.

Hi tomitomi, Glad to see someone from my homeland here in myLot! Your discussion topic is interesting and rare in myLot world, it got me thinking. I usually have some ideas on what to comment, but I had to think for awhile before I got some ideas for this, maybe it is pertaining to areas that I'm not familiar with, such as disabled people and charity work. With little or no funds was another restriction you made for your proposal. Hmm... Okay, this is what I would do. No money it's okay, but we have brains. I would write an ebook (dunno on what topic yet) and sell it online. It doesn't cost much. The proceeds can be used to fund the activities of the disabled, like therapy or outings, etc. My way of doing things, small and simple.

Hi Sydney! I'm glad to see you too. The ebook, it's one great idea to fund the activities! And That's a good start 'small and simple'. Like this idea! Thanks so much for sharing.

That's a great idea. But the simplest way to accumulate funds is to put up a fund raising program. It could be anything from having a garage sale to putting up a mini concert with a local band. That's what i can come up with.

I will just try my best to make the most of what we can do together. I will lend them most of my abilities to teach and impart what i know and what ive learned to this disabled people. And to make their lives a lil bit easier by telling them how to be of good use to the community in their own little ways .I may not be enough to help all their worries and problems but small people like me in my small ways makes the difference in life. You will never know with your small contribution you will be able to help someone change the way he or she looks at his or her life.

Hi setsuna dear friend Absolutely yes. Small ways are never small when they benefit many. Or when they benefit humankind and society. Unless we put them into good use they remain small forever. And you being such a great sport with many of your discussions, I have trust that you would. Thank you so much my friend. Great to hear from you. Take care!
