Pierced Ears

I as had to wait until I was seven to get my ears pierced. And wait again until I was 13 to get a second piercing in my ears. I let my daugter have hers when she was 3 1/2. She has done very well with them over the years. Now... I have seen infant boys with piercings and many infant girls too. What do you think about that? Maybe the kids will grow up and not want them? Or be like many of my friends where when their ears grew, the piercings were not even anymore (in the center, or up too high on the skin flap.)

In my community, most girls (and in the previous generations boys too) had to get their ears pierced. It is customary to get it done during the naming ceremony which is around the 28th day after birth...some families during the Durga Pooja festival. It is common for baby girls ears to be pierced before the age of 1 and we would find it unusual if a girl didn't have her ears pierced. My ears were pierced when I was around a month or so...and my sister had her ears pierced when she was 8 months old. The boys don't pierce their ears as a custom but it's more of a fashion statement in their teens or early 20s. My father had his ears pierced...but none of his younger male siblings have. I've never seen my dad wear the traditional ear rings for men either (he probably had it as a child and not after). Neither my husband nor my sons have had their ears pierced. The piercings do not change place (that's what I thought)...it hasn't for anyone I know.

I got my ears pierced at a young age. My kids when they got there ears pierced when they were young they didn't bother there ears or try to take them out. I made sure I showed them how to keep them clean and twist the earrings a couple times a day so they wouldn't hurt as bad. My middle daughter has her ears pierced almost all the way around her ear. But she is of age now and she has to make her choices.

I did the maintenance for my daughter; as my mother did for me. I couldn't imagine piercing my whole ear. ouch

I have 2 holes in each ear. Those hurt bad enough getting them pierced with just a needle. I wouldn't get my ears pierced all the way around. To me that is just way to many hole for me. But now a days people get there whole body pierced and I think that is crazy.

I used to cringe when I'd be in the mall and a mom would be getting her baby's ears pierced. And when I say baby, I mean like 6 months old. I just don't think that is a good idea. It may look cute, but on a baby?! Shouldn't they be able to talk first? I was ten before my parents let me get my ears pierced. When I was thirteen I got two more holes in each ear. But I soon got tired of that and let them grow back. So now I just have one hole in each ear.

I agree with you. I cringe when I see infants getting their ears pierced... I've seen parents doing it to their infant sons too. That is just too much. At least, let them show an interest first. It's permanent!

I had my daughter's ears pierced when she was three months old. She is now almost seven and a half years old and we've never had a problem out of her piercing. When it was done, it was easy to have done as she was small and it was quite easy to restrain her. She barely cried at all, so really that was a non-issue. At this point in time, her holes are still straight and she is now getting very creative with her choices in earrings. If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't change a thing about my choices.

I am glad things are working out for your daughter. Maybe I'll have to look up some pics of my friend from junior high who weren't in that boat. During puberty their ears grew some more and their piercings changed location. (too high mostly)

A lot of my cousins had their ears pierced at a very young age; they're girls, though. I think my aunts understand that they'll want their ears pierced eventually, so piercing them when they're young and won't remember the pain seemed like a good idea to them. My mom and dad wanted me to decide for myself when I wanted my ears pierced, so they just waited until I was brave enough to get them pierced. I'd wanted them since elementary school, but I didn't have enough guts to get them done until junior high. I have absolutely no masochistic tendencies, so it took a while for me to get my nerves together; I almost wished that my parents had pierced my ears when I was younger. Regardless, I do respect that it is up to the parents to decide what is the right time for their child to get pierced ears. I do appreciate that my parents let me decide for myself though.

hi cmjune! i had my little girl's ears pierced when she was 7days old. it's actually her first visit to the pedia too. i don't see any problem with that early piercing at least she's save from that one pain =) cause her tolerance from such is really low.

I believe it is entirely up to the parents... Now I do beleive that when the kids get old enough to decided weather or not they "like" it then they should be allowed to either take them out or get more... but I know that they usually don't grow back.. but if they don't like them the holes are usually not that noticable... I have my ears pierced 3 times on the bottom and 2 on the top.. and I rarely ever wear them and you cant really tell
