Lottery - Is There A Better Solution?

In Malaysia, it has been reported that Muslims are getting arrested for buying the country's legalized and legitimate lottery. Reports even stated that the religious body is seeking that the Malay language papers be banned from publishing lottery results and they have even plans to set up more mobile patrols to keep the Muslims in check. All this in the name of Islam which forbids gambling. I just find this so contradictory and Malaysia with a Muslim majority could allow and legalize lottery and yet prohibit their majority from supporting it. Isn't the state in the wrong - religiously, to legalize lottery and casino? Wouldn't it be simpler and easier if the country could just ban lottery and casino as a whole? Than to be looked upon as being hypocritical?

Some play lottery because of curiosity and having fun i guess but not thinking of it as a gambling, but of course there are also lots of people who are very hooked onto it and they find it more as gambling. Anyway you are right they can ban the whole not arrest each people caught buying those lottery tickets. But i guess another reason why they can't ban it because the owners are too rich to the extent they can pay for the lottery not to be stopped and they can pay people to kill those people who wants to stop their gambling business.

rjvb26, The game of chances is what I would deem these local legalized lotteries to be and I am sure that it is being established for the fun than letting things get out of control. I can understand religious sects to abhor and ban gambling, however, I do not see eye to eye when the religious sects are sitting in the very places that issue license and permits for these lotteries. I just felt that these arrests and banning of the Malay language papers from announcing lottery results to be a little far fetched and overboard.

MAllen400, My exact sentiments here. These arrests are just being overboard and I am sure it will be in every Muslims mind there. The ones who legalize it is also the one banning it from their own, which is just baffling to me.

the government is very concern with how 'the world' will judge malaysia.. they want to be known as a 'tolerant muslim country' - a country where the 'official religion' is Islam , and yet, would still allow the non-muslims to 'enjoy' their life, with prohibitions / restrictions practiced unto the Muslims.. so that we will be labelled 'Extremist'.. and yes, i do find it 'hypocritical' - the non-muslims already know what are restrictions and prohibitions in Islam.. and i think as the people living in an 'Islamic Country (?)', they should learn to accept this as also part of their life/culture.. probably the government is the one confused as to what an 'Islamic Country' means..

I think that it would be a better thing to not have these kind of contests at all than to have them available where no one would be able to participate. Frankly, lottery and casinos are legal in my country, but I really don't participate in them because I can't afford to hedge my bets on something that is most likely not going to end up in a payout for me. In all honesty, I don't think that these kind of activities should be highlighted the way that they are in any community.

Goes to show that their government doesn't have unity. That is dumb if you ask me. Why legalize the lottery and arrest those who wants to play it? That's dumb.

frontvisions101, My exact sentiments here. I just find that they could have better ways to check gambling addiction than using arrests to deter it. After all, it is legal and the government is also Muslim majority - this is just contradicting themselves. I am sure the majority will agree that there's always a line between recreation and gambling. I just hope that the arrests will not continue in this manner.
